1999 Ford Taurus Won't Start Sign In

I6 engine with about 89,000 miles.

Three times in the last year it would not start after making a short trip with it. It would "cough" but never fully run. After waiting 10-15 minutes it would start right up.

It has never exhibited any other symptoms normally associated with a coil, fuel pump or fuel filter problem (loss of power while running, stalling, backfires, etc).

I replaced the fuel filter and cleaned the injectors last fall after getting a bad batch of gas (also dropped the tank and got rid of the bad gas).

It's in my garage now and refuses to start. Unlike previous times, it does not "cough (try to start)." There's no sign of any spark/fuel ignition. It just grinds.

Because I replaced the fuel filter less than 8,000 miles ago, I suspect that is not the culprit. Can anyone think of anything besides the coil and fuel pump and could be causing the problem?

Thanks in advance.

Not sure what you mean by "There's no sign of any spark/fuel ignition. It just grinds.".. when it acts up you have to see what is missing fuel or spark. Get a fuel pressure tester for a auto parts store, most have a loan-a-tool program. Post the fuel pressure here (in PSI) along with your engine type (12v or 24v). Make sure there is spark too, you can use a spark tester tool or ground a plug while connected to a spark wire while a assistant cranks the engine for you. I don`t recommend this method due to risk of shock. 10,000+ volts has the potential to be harmful.
