Jeep smoking while driving (gray colored). Leftdry sooty deposit on back of vehicle. Was not really oily but more dry. 4 litre engine, 4-wheel drive with 160000 miles. Vehicle has been running hotter than normal (just above 210). Recently flushed system and installed new thermostat.

buckeye; As for the temp, you should be running a 195F thermostat, so 210F is about normal. As for the sooty exhaust, sounds that it is running too rich. There are many causes of a rich condition. Is the 'check engine' or 'service engine soon' lamp illuminated? Running rough? Most parts stores will retrieve any stored trouble codes for free. Post those codes here, and we'll see what we can do to help. Oh....did the sooty exhaust happen before or after the stat replacement? If the old stat was stuck open, the engine may have been running too cool, hence the rich condition.. Loren SW Washington
