I have a 1999 Jeep Grand Cherokee. A few months ago all of my gauges failed. No speedometer, Gas Gauge, Etc. My automatic lights quit working and like failures. I noticed a small picture of a key appear on the dash inside of a slashed out circle. Tonight I went out to take a small drive and it started up and within 2 seconds shut it self off. It is like the Skis system is malfunctioning. I do not have a spare key to see if it would make a difference. I have tried unplugging the battery and unlocking the driver door to reset the security system with no difference. A wild hair told me to take out the radio. On doing so the lights in the car quickly flicked on and off 3 times. I can now start the car and drive it but still have no gauges and have to use the manual switch for the headlights. This all started when the REK quit working. One small problem leading to a larger. We have replaced the battery, cleaned connections and I have read every forum I could find online. The light with the key slashed out stays on steadily. Are there any suggestions?

What is REK?

Seems you have some sort of PCI bus problem. You need to scan all the modules in the vehicle using a high end scanner to see if they are communicating over the bus and if they are storing any trouble codes. There is a possiblity a module could be bringing down the bus or corupting the data traveling over it.

"The PCI Bus failure modes are broken down into two categories. Complete PCI Bus Failure and individual module no response. Causes of Complete PCI Bus Failure include a short to ground or battery on the PCI circuit. Individual module no response can be caused by an open circuit at either the Diagnostic Junction Port or the module or an open battery or ground circuit to the affected module.

Symptoms of a Complete PCI Bus Failure would include but are not limited to:
- All gauges on the MIC stay at zero
- All telltales on MIC illuminate
- MIC backlighting at full intensity
- Dashed lines in the EVIC ambient temperature display
- No response received from any module on the PCI bus
- No start (if equipped with Sentry Key Immobilizer)"

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
