My son has a 1999 chevy camaro he went out to start it and it would turn over but wouldn't start. Lights go on so I know it wasn't the battery and the alternator is new. I took it to VIP because it was next door to were it broke down. They said it was the cataylac converter it was $750 to fix so we fixed it. They had us come pick it up and on the the way down they called and said they took it for a test ride and while they did that the fuel pump went and the part for that is $500 with labor the total would be $900 not including the $750 for the converter. I told them to hold off on fixing the fuel pump and left the car there for now. My question is if anyone knows if it was the fuel pump the whole time? And maybe it wasn't the cataylac converter. I'm not a mechanic so i'm hearing different stories so before I go down there and state my case I want to make sure I don't say the wrong thing. Any help or suggestions would be great. Thanks

Without being there during the testing, can't give you an answer to your question.

Just tell them to show you the catalytic converter and to point out where it is plugged. Also tell them you want the converter. You can get money for those.

If I was to guess here, I would guess the fuel pump was the actual reason for the breakdown. A plugged converter would have failed very slowly and would have given you a lot of warning in the form of lost power at higher RPMs.

Ditto: Only time I've seen sudden block for any reason was trauma (bent shut) -- converters to me were slower to die out completely as just said. Model year 1999 would most likely have sent a code of inefficiency along the way,
