2000 Chevy Malibu Engine Cuts off Sign In

Hello potential Friends,
I have a 2000 Chevy Malibu, V6 Automatic. One night I was driving around carelessly and I forgot to add anti-freeze to my vehicle. Needless to say the poor thing overheated, and cut-off(to prevent further damage). I later added antifreeze and all seemed well. Until I was heading home from work one night. The engine quit accelerating, after that i lost power steering and the engine cut off again. The temperature gauge was not showing any signs of overheating(and had antifreeze in it this time). After it died i waited for a minute and tried to crank it again, only it would not start even when I gave it gas. After about 30 minutes and it finally cooled down, I was able to drive it again.

Is it possible that The first time it overheated it did some kind of damage to my computer, Randomly deciding to put it into safe mode?

All in all I am a little stumped, If anyone out there knows why it is doing this, please throw me some Ideas. I can add additional information if needed just ask.

Thank you so much in advance

The way this works is that when the engine overheats the computer doesn't turn off the engine on this particular model. The engine will keep running until it gets so hot in the combustion chambers that fuel/air vaporizes before it even has a chance to be lit off by spark plug plasma. You'll usually hear a bunch of detonation going on. The pistons over expand and can seize in the cylinder bores causing the engine to shut off. Usually there is some type of mechanical damage when it overheated to the point it shuts down. This can range from blown head gaskets and warped heads to cylinder walls, piston skirts, and piston ring damage.

Your first step should be to find out where your coolant is going and repair that problem first. Then make sure the overheating problem is resolved. If the engine still stalls and doesn't restart, you'll have to follow the steps on this page (follow link) to figure out some type of direction to go to resolve the stalling issue.
