2000 Toyota Celica GT

2000 Toyota Celica GT Sign In

So, I have a 1.8L 2000 Toyota Celica GT with 139k miles and it has several troubles. Mainly, whenever I'm driving it makes a LOUD thumping sound and leaves a vibration in my pedals, as well as in my steering wheel at high speeds. The sound sounds like a flat tire would and is a general thump, but does not affect how my car steers or controls. This noise ets louder and faster the faster the car is going, so at low speeds it's really minimal. To try to fix it we've replaced the right wheel bearing, right strut assembly, and right CV axle. Our mechanic looked at the left sidea and those things were all fine. We lifted it in the air on a hydraulic lift, took of the left wheel hub and knuckle and ran the car, but the noise was still there. He traced it back and believes it could be the transmission output shafts bearing, but with all the things we've replaced so far, I don't know how reliable of an answer that was. What could this sound possible be related to, and if it is the bearing he's talking about, how difficult or expensive of a repair is it typically? Thank you

Seems like the approach so far is throw to use the parts cannon on this till by luck the shop hits on it. if it feels like a wheel/flat tire it probably is something to do with wheel or tire. You don't or shouldn't have to replace a wheel bearing and never just one strut as a guess you should or they should KNOW it's bad first.


Rotate tires see if problem changes or follows the wheels. So far this could even be bad motor mounts allowing too much motion of engine/trans feels like hell isn't hard to diagnose which is what should be done not guess and toss parts at it,

Thank you for the reply, but the nose and vibration still persists even when it's off the ground with both front wheels, hubs, and knuckles off of the car. It's also not the motor mounts. They're actually really solid which surprised me.

Does the engine itself run smoothly and evenly on all cylinders or now with those things ruled out check either codes or cancel one cylinder at a time. Also just look at lowest belt which is the harmonic balancer and belt(s) are in perfect alignment. Balancers can be off or fall off very odd symptoms have to catch those if so or rule out as much as you can.


Mounts without load couldn't be the issue unless it fell off of them and they really can't so not that.


Keep crossing things off the possible items list till you've clearly found the source. IDK - sometimes it just helps to have another look at it just see something that's not catching notice can help a lot,
