I was driving my 2001 4-cylindar manual rodeo home on Friday and the radiator needle spiked. I pulled off an exit and looked at it. The overflow tank was almost full. The cap to the overflow tank was loose so I put a rubber band on it as a temporary fix. I drove the rest of the way home and the needle would consistently bounce from the middle to the top, but it didn't stay overheated for any long period. The car also felt week during acceleration. I got it home and have left it since Friday. The overflow tank is now about a quarter of the way full and the radiator looks empty. Other than filling the radiator, what should I do?

Oh yes it did. The needle was bouncing because the gauge was seeing nothing but hot air because it was running out of coolant. It was still very hot and likely did some internal damage. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

I am an optimist, simple things first it will be OK.... I would refill coolant*- maybe adding some dye or tracer - free for me but wouldn't recommend you pay for it YET- PRESSURE test cooling system, work this till a leak or cause of overheating is found ..... *some models require air bleeding as you refill -
