Ok so I own a 2001 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
Its base, long bed reg cab 2WD, housing a 5.3 V8 and just shy of 200k miles, I think its 199,956.

The issue is when I have the A/C turned on and the truck is idling it will over heat, but if its idling without the A/C its fine, its also fine if the A/C is on but I'm driving. It heats up pretty pretty quick and it will max out the meter within 5 min.

So specifically Idling with A/C on it will climb up pretty fast to red. Any thoughts? I'm hoping with such a specific set of parameters for it to over heat, someone might be able to give a good guess as to what it is.

I don't want to take it in to a mechanic for something like a thermostat replacement that I can manage myself.

Let me know what I can check myself to give you guys anymore clues, or if there are things I can check to prove or disprove a certain part as the culprit.

Thanks, just got on here after this problem arose so excuse my newness.

It's going to come down to a fan clutch or a radiator. They work together and one of them isn't doing it's job. It should be pretty easy to tell is the fan is pulling enough air at idle.

Hurry with this as it's you engine you risk. If only with A/C on which is adding heat I think the fan clutch most likely. They make a "severe" duty which will roar more and will pull tons or air thru.

If you never recall putting on a new one they do lose it over time. A/C will work better too.

No bugs or dirt over condenser either or that will screw up the show. You should be feeling the heat (carefully) being thrown off the fan and IMO temp gauge should stay stable once warmed up not fluctuate. If raditor can't throw heat the clutch would not work as hard as HT said. Both must be good,

Ok, i'll check that, I also forgot to mention that since I got the truck which was last September, the heat was not working very well, it would take a good 10-20 minute drive before there was a descent amount of heat.

?? It can overheat and heater doesn't work well. Time to check coolant level in radiator/engine and if low need to know why and would be checking for head gasket issues putting gasses into cooling system.

If that checks out at least flush cooling system,
