2001
Toyota
Camry
4 cylinder 2.2L
150,000

So First of all, I appologize but this is going to be long to cover all bases.
I traded a laptop for this camry that i was told just needed a new battery (battery was completely gone) and a new fuel pump. I replaced those 2 things and the car didnt start. Troubleshooted and gave up and took it to a mechanic, who replaced/fixed the following:
Fan Switch
Thermostat
Antifreeze
Valve cover set with grommets
Spark Plugs (NGK 3452 {#BKR6EKPB11} Laser Platinum Info
Gap 0.044"; Actual OE Part)
100 amp fuse
temperature sensor
Fixed electrical short
Flushed injectors with 2 step can machine

After driving the car away from the mechanic I still had check engine light showing codes:
P0401
P0300

*I did fill the tank up with 91 octane to try to make sure it was not a old/bad gas issue.

I'm sure most people are now thinking, well bring it back to the mechanic, but he tried to charge me $1300+ for that work posted above and I got pretty upset with him, talked him down to $500 and don't want to go back to him.

Research i read about P0401 said it's likely the EGR valve and that i could probably just clean it out and make the code go away, but i bought a brand new one and replaced it.

Research i read about P0300 said its multiple misfires so i used an electric ignition spark tester and i did notice that cylinder 2 wire seemed faint with the tester. I ordered new NGK wires and also pulled a spark plug to check the model # and gap. As mentioned above, they were the NGK double type and so the gap is preset and they were matching what is correct for this year/model.
With the new wires installed the car now would not start at all! So to reiterate, before the car was running pretty well, but had these 2 codes throwing check engine. Now with the new wires it wouldnt start at all.

The Coil packs looked like they were coated in a really gross thick layer of grease/oil so i bought a pack of 2 brand new coil packs and replaced the front one today since that one was the easier of the 2 to access and replace and it was also connected to Cylinder 2, which had the faintish spark before on test. This replacement coil pack made no difference, the car would not start.
I retested all 4 wires with the spark tester and they all sparked fine, so the coil packs and wires seem to be okay.
Myself and a friend tried spraying brake cleaner into the intake to test if maybe it was a fuel problem and we still were not able to get it started. The ignition switch is new and the starter seems to sound fine. We tested the brand new battery to make sure it was working and it was reading 12-13V. We tried jumping it just in case and that made no difference.

We are now thinking it could be a cam or crank sensor? Any help would be greatly appreciated. As you can imagine, i'm extremely confused because before the car was running, but with the codes. Now it doesnt run at all even with new parts.

So, let me get this straight. You bought a car for the equivalent of a couple hundred dollars. You brought this car to a mechanic to repair the numerous issues the car had and then you didn't want to pay for it. Now you tried to fix it yourself and it will no longer run.

Sounds to me like you got was you bargained for.

I have a friend that fell on tough times, wife divorced him, lost his job, had his car repo'd, etc. I got this car for him so that he can travel to job interviews and to work when he gets a job. The mechanic i took the car to is overall a good guy and did a full motor swap for me on a corvette a few years back. I more recently bought an expensive sports car and this mechanic knows about it. After he saw my new car years back he asked me to invest in a business with him and i turned him down.
After sending me the "rip off" bill for $1300 he said "tell me the secret to making the big bucks" on a text to me.

You may be a mechanic too so feel like I'm judging all mechanics and don't want to help me, but I'm literally trying to just get this car running to give it to my friend. There is no benefit to me from this.

It's an all volunteer forum friend so relax there's no motivation from anyone here to mess you up. Hard to read top post shows 2-3 pages all run on to me isn't helping but get the drift. Lots done on a used car told it just needs XYZ and off you go. Real world - doesn't work that way or seller should have sold it running perfectly to get more for it to begin with - right?

One tidbit out of top post is you used quoting you ">Myself and a friend tried spraying brake cleaner into the intake to test if maybe it was a fuel problem and we still were not able to get it started.<"
No joking sport some brands are almost a flame arrestor will prevent a fire READ THE CAN. Don't use that to act like a fuel for checking rather now right to starting fluid but put air cleaner parts all back on in case it fires out at you!

It's already written here by Hammer Time what step to take for "All Crank, No Start" problem is step by step rule thing out and the spray trick would be one just not with brake cleaner. Let "HT" we call him post the thread if you don't see it or I'll go look for it for you,

Thanks for the link Tom. I am going to pick up some of these testing kits tomorrow per the recommendation here from Hammer Time.

Thanks again

OK - Check for rentals if doing some yourself from parts outlets more are doing free loaners tools for full deposits. Do also keep battery fully charged so you can test without that being the issue. Automatic one that shut off and turn on as needed low AMP "maintainers" is a common name for them. Hood light disconnected don't let that wreck the show.
Just get started let your questions come as things progress if taking this on some or a lot yourself. Your turn,

Tom
