I have a 2002 Ford Focus - I think the engine is 2.0 - over 133 thousand miiles. New clutch was put in around March 2011. The mechanic said I would need a new clutch cable eventually. 3rd gear has been tricky but it has been driveable. Last night when I went to put it in 1st gear I could not get it to go in. It would go in 2nd 4th and 5th - but it was like something was blocking it from going in 1st and 3rd.This morning it went into 1st but looking at the shifter it looked like it was in 3rd and I still could not get all the it to shift in all the gears and shifting is difficult.

I recommend getting this fixed quickly, started having same problem with my 94 Ranger but did not take it in, as a result I ruined my transmission and had to get rid of the car. Sounds like it could be master or slave cylinder, so be prepared to spend some $$

see if it will go into gear not running while parked if it dose, check your master cylinder level make sure it's not empty you might have a leak somewhere causing clutch not to work properly.

I took it to a shop - When the new clutch was put in by a 'mobile mechanic' in February, he failed to refill the transmission fluid. So, I have been driving with no transmission fluid for 4 months. Yeah, the transmission is shot. Of course, that guy is no where to be found :( Lesson learned - I will only take my car to an established business from now on.
