2002 Mitsubishi Galant cranks but won't run Sign In

2002 Mitsubishi Galant
2.4L, 4 cylander
115,000

Hey there guys,
So I was "helping" a friend fix a problem that he had with this car and now the car won't run. He inherited the car from his brother who won't be needing in for a little while and the thing had a leaking heater core. Instead of replacing the heater core, we just decided to bypass the thing altogther. I removed the airbox cover and such up to the throttle body, and removed the battery to make more room for the job because I bypassed the core by routing a u-joint to and from the block itself. I put everything back together, replenished the coolant, and then tried to start the car only to find that it cranks but won't run for more than a second, if that.

The computer is fine and is not giving any codes. The mechanic who checked for the codes used starter fluid to keep the motor going and told me that it was a fuel issue and that I should look for a problem there. All fuses are fine and there is no filter between the pump housing and the injectors. I couldn't check the fuel pressure at the lines because i can't get my hands on the special adapter that this motor requires for me to do that, so I replaced the fuel pump itself thinking that this should solve the problem. But it didn't.

He says that maybe it's the injectors or a cam/crank sensor, or a bad ground.

What do you guys think?

It sounds like you reset the security system when you disconnected the battery.

If you have a remote, try unlocking it with that. If that doesn't work lock all the doors and open the driver's door with the key.

Make sure he's using a good key.

I tried locking it and unlocking it, as well as holding down the unlock button for thirty seconds two different ways, and nothing. Should I reach out to a dealership or a shop tomorrow and ask them for the protocol. Like a walmart auto center or anybody who installs batteries should know how to handle this yeah?

Lets first confirm we are dealing with a security issue and not a bad fuel pump.

Look for a flashing security light or LED or even a dash message.

If you have a different key, try that. Forget Walmart and the like. This is way beyond them. You would need a real high end scan tool to get to the cause like the dealer or competent repair shop.

Ok, so i've watched a video about immobilizers that have been triggered and those care don't run for a second and then die; they just crank and never start which is then followed by a blinking green light on the dash. I don't have a blinking green light showing up. While I pursue this further by calling local mechanics to see who's willing to help over the phone, do you guys have any further ideas?

What makes you think someone is going to help you for free over the phone? They are running a business.

The car needs to be scanned to find out what triggered the security system in the first place.

If you continue to take advice from professor Google, you are just going to dig a deeper hole.

Re: 2002 Mitsubishi Galant cranks but won't run Sign In

Cause there's friendly mechanics round here. Not friendly enough to loan out tools, mind you, but friendly enough to loan you an ear for a minute.

Does this require a special scantool, or will a standard mechanics grade obd2 scanner do the trick? I know a guy who's got one of those and who already had it hooked up to the car, but his scan tool didn't send any codes when we tried to start the car.

I've found that to not be true even half the time, actually. After all Professor Google let me know that there's a green light with the picture of a key over a silhouette of a car that's supposed to blink when one tries to start this generation of galant while the immobilizer has been triggered before you'd mentioned blinking lights on dash boards yourself. I'm just trying to be helpful on my end here in any way that I can with my limited means, because I have to get this car back to my friend.

I've thought that this was a computer issue from the start because my jeep liberty cranked, ran, and stalled almost exactly in the same way that this galant is right now, but followed a mechanics advice about the fuel problem because he showed it would run with starter fluid. Now my buddy is out $117 because of a bad lead, so here I am.

Re: 2002 Mitsubishi Galant cranks but won't run Sign In

Ok. So I know it's been a while since I've updated this thread and there's been developments in this problem. With his tablet, the mechanic was able to find out that the immobilizer was not running and that the most likely culprit was probably a broken balance shaft belt, but we also discovered that the throttle position sensor and the idle valve control sensor was bad (severely overheating, in fact). So I tore it all down, found out the belt was indeed broken, replaced both belts, all three tensioners, and the water pump which had a serious leak coming from it; plus, I replaced the bad sensors.

The car still won't run however. My work was checked by the mechanic that I'm working with occasionally and he said that the timing was done great so that wasn't the issue. So we moved on and started with a compression check. The cylinders read 130, 140, 110, and 135, but that wasn't the weird part.

The weird part is that ever since the car has been dead in my driveway, it seemed to me to be struggling to start a bit. I'm not a professional, but I know how a healthy engine sounds when it starts and it always seemed to just slug through it. When doing a compression test with all the plugs removed the engine sounded healthy when all but cylinder 3 was being tested. Mike (the mechanic) and I thought that the battery was going dead when we hit cylinder 3 so we let the battery charge before we started it again and found out that theres a problem when the 3rd cylinder is under pressure.

What does this sound like to you? Mike says he's at the limit of his skills, I'm about to reach out to a coworker over this because her father owns a shop. I know I gotta tear this thing down and get to the pistons more than likely, and Mike suggested just buying a working motor online and dropping that in, but that's just not an option for my friend and I.

"Severely overheated" > That will wreck the day.
How about getting this seriously assessed as to fix or toss that engine?
Yes, it could would mean paying for it you said this person's dad owned a shop is that helpful or not to this level?

Decision time it should run compression is just cranking speed measures may go up and run just OK - right? Not for long though it's had it's troubles from the overheat.

Try to blow air in plug hole of #3 see where the air comes out on TDC could be telling of how bad or worse than known,

What belt was broken? When this engine goes out of time it bends valves.

I don't understand the connection between the sensors and something overheating. Please explain.

The belt for the balance shaft was broke. Mike's scan tool said that if this happens then the intake manifold needs to be replaced with it cause it can develop a crack somewhere, but honestly we can hear anything leaking from the intake manifold.

The Idle Valve Control sensor is what was overheating and it was replaced along with the throttle position sensor because that was showing bad voltage and response time.

Re: 2002 Mitsubishi Galant cranks but won't run Sign In

So I used Mike's compression test kit hose and my air compressor to test the valves and sure as anything we can hear air coming from the intake when #3 was tested. It may be bent valves that's causing the car to struggle and die. I still have to talk to my friend to see if he wants to proceed because the local machine shop is gonna charge him $125 to resurface the head and pressure test, and $20 per valve.

I don't believe I'll be putting the money out for this repair for him for a week or so if he wants to proceed, but if/when the time comes up post an update on what's happened.

With air test now marking trouble + costs somewhat known so far double check it was on TDC while together you won't know more with it apart so easily,
