Hi Guys, I've got a problem with my 2002 Nissan Pathfinder and wanted to see if you guys had ever experienced something similar, or whether you think my solution is the correct one! Over the past few weeks, I've noticed the electrical system lacking a bit of power intermittently. So things like the power windows were working very slowly, or the seats were moving slowly. The next thing to happen is that the ABS and Air Bag light would come on for a while and it would seem like the engine was about to stall. Next the engine would stall, and then it wouldn't restart - would sound like the battery was flat. So I would jump start the car, and it would drive for a bit, then it would die again. I thought maybe the battery was bad - so replaced the battery on Wednesday and it ran great. Turned over nice and hard, everything ran perfectly! However by Sunday, I started noticing the same symptoms! And then Monday it stalled and wouldn't start without a jump. Last night, I checked the battery and the charge was low so I hooked it up overnight to a trickle charger and it started up just fine again this morning! Would you guys think this I have a bad alternator? Is there anyway to test the alternator before I replace it? I like doing these things myself, so hoping to get some advice before I proceed!! Steve

Yes, you need to test the charging system. If it fails that test, that doesn't automatically mean the alternator is bad. There are other things that can stop the charging system but the alternator is the most likely. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
