2003 Hyundai Tiburon not starting
|
|
|
The car has been running great past 3 years regular maintenance done every 3-5 months, this past winter when i was parking outside there were some rough starts (battery died sometimes) then once it was parked in the garage everything was fine again until last week while my room mate was driving the motor just quit no sputter no indication anything was going to happen (he says) We have been working on testing many things. I can hear the fuel pump working, battery is fine(tried jumping and charger) we replaced plugs and the crank shaft positioning sensor. (was shattered inside) getting a good spark however it will not start even with starter fluid. Ive also rented the obt2 tool from autozone but that does not help since there seems to be a ground short(? best internet result) so i cannot even get the thing to turn on in the car.(works fine in the borrowed jeep) Ive read some other posts on coil pack needed replaced to make the spark stronger or maybe the timing belt being off a little bit but the number of days we've worked on it already i may do 1 or 2 more things before going to a shop. After posting i read the sticky... I didnt do all of those tests but i believe the guys i had helping me (they having much more experience than i do) checked these before assuming the sensor except maybe the compression/pressure test. Seems they are lost on the project and im essentially on my own now.

The sticky is a "process of elimination" that will lead to the problem. It sounds like you first need to have your battery tested and replaced if necessary. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

A no start is BASICS. you want step by step - 1) when you turn key to start- what is happening? it cranks spins over or NOTHING happens ? 2) Is or was the Ck Eng light on ? 3) is there a remote start? 4) recent history- repairs maintenance - accidents- etc.

Time to perform all the tests in the sticky to determine what function/s have dropped out.

Guys are back over doing some work, 5lbs pressure on the fuel (can you test this on a car that wont start? all guides ive read say to let it run or start it up etc) and we tested 1 spark plug at 90psi then 60 then 90

Check that fuel pressure again while cranking. It can't run with that pressure. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

the fuel test is connected to the return line, do we just disconnect the pressured one to test that? mechanics here are confused on the import btw we did test while cranking

No, that won't work. You have to "T" into the feed line. You will likely need some special adapters for the gauge. They make some that can tap into the fuel filter. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

he was pretty unwilling to try the fuel pressure test (because of the lack of knowing where to port into it) and is having someone more experienced come over and check it out, we have 4 people here calling others (dads grandpas etc) and also searching the internet its quite the mess since everyone has different ideas

That's not good news. This is an interference engine meaning there is usually bent valves when a timing belt lets go. This is why you have to change these things when recommended. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

so it probably will not start unless i got lucky and the valves didnt bend... chances slim to none since both vehicles and my fridge broke at the same time I would have replaced it had i known, only driven it 30k miles and with that gear being chipped it would have tore up a new belt, wonder what made it chip like that

Question closed......... Poster seems to have the opinion we are no help anyway. http://autoforums.carjunky.com/...t=search_engine#last If he had followed the "useless" tests in the sticky in the first place he would have know his timing belt was bad a long time ago ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
