03 civic with a 1.7 Recently replaced battery that was NG No problems till we stopped at a store came back out wouldn't crank . Removed ign. fuse under dash board cleaned off the tarnish and it fired up . No problems for 4 days then made a stop , came back out and wouldn't crank . Dash board will light up then die after you try and crank it . Checked applicable mega fuses and interior fuses , can not connect with the ECM with OBD II . The battery was tested at nipa , went to adverse auto first and they said it was beat don't even try and charge it . No one can be trusted .What do you think it could be ? thanks .

Is that 2 places tested it? If it shorts inside can happen new. Didn't we beat on this already. New isn't sure yet do charge new ones 1st when possible know then. Without a machine to add load for testing the car is "a load test" just to start it. That if U know cables are all clean and good. QC of crap parts today is payback for a pandemic I think? Too much not even just car parts just horrible of my bad luck? Tom

Napa said it was a good battery , I'll add there's no headlights or horn . I think some places tell you the batt is bad just to sell one . It's a week old battery , it tested good twice .

Is this an automatic or stick? Sounds like you are dealing with a corrison problem. Start with cleaning the battery post & cables real good with a terminal cleaner. Clean all the connections at the block and body as well. If the problem is still happening, then it's time to move on to the starter relay and check for powers and grounds on all the terminals to see which leg has the problem.

Few if any local to me have a working load tester out of car! That or claim it's broken all the time. It's old as dirt but no horn TMK should stay powered car on, off keys in it or not like flashers and brake lights. A test using the car where ready to charge it with a charger if a must to use is don't let it start but a rest 20 times allow time for starter to cool. A good battery, proper wires all good will. Other is but not sure leave headlight on, on purpose, car off not in "run" position should last 1/2 hour or more and still start for real at a good starter speed/sound. AMPS can lack is like the HP of a car battery the voltage is the "push" of power are related but not the same if they only check plain volts off car that means diddle squat. It's rather how long it stays up there under a load - follow my BS? If it fails it's no good or even quickly lead-acid batteries going low commit suicide inside you or how they got handled matters too. Try but if you can show them at NAPA if where you got it if they don't believe it then they shouldn't be selling batteries IMO, Tom

It's an automatic . Batt is new terminals are clean , the cable on the clamp could use improvement I'll clean that up . It's sitting at a store and it's going to the shop if I have to tow it , Don't want to tow it home and end up having to take it to the shop anyways . Is there a way to get it out of park without starting it up ?

A weak battery only usually will make solenoid flutter at low AMPS then if way too low just one click - lights or thing go out, radio presets lost etc. That IS usually a bad cable or connection. From battery see where they head ground to engine block also to body metal at battery or from block is the norm. Positive cable should go directly with highest gauge to solenoid of starter on top of starters. The weak link to any the show quits. Wire itself sometimes a wrinkle spot is a break inside it. Sorry for the novel this was road call city once pull on ground cable (at dangerous site) would usually get a start if that connection. Corrosion is the enemy - anything wiring these are primal to start it double up to feed the rest of car at an end. Load testing battery itself know if voltage only use the post not the U-bolt do that one again while it's being started - helper required. Should stay the same voltage drop either one the U-bolt will be way off/low if alone the issue. They stink yet can be tight shouldn't be able to turn one with pliers or NG. Today cable ends that make a great connection are available smash the cut cable end and really makes it work well if the issue. Always some "ifs" with just exactly where the issue is if you are testing with minimal equipment try at those U-bolts should NOT touch being tight nor turn or if not THE problem is one now waiting, Tom

It appears to be a connection problem somewhere. The next time it dies turn the headlights on or crank the radio up loud so you will know when power is restored and then just go around tugging on wires until the system responds and you've pinpointed your problem. If nothing under the hood responds you will have to do the same thing under the dash and near the fuse box and steering column. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Problem solved , it was the pos. batt cable , it looked O.K. . The end was 2 frayed wires , I twisted them up separate cleaned things up and clamped them down . I'm losing my touch , the whole intermittent thing threw me off . Thanks for the help now the question is how to secure those 2 wires . I heard soldering them may not be good for this application .

GREAT! If one nearby even Wally World had some better looking ends, solid, brassish claimed. Last I was on the hunt for pre-made no-go you fix the end not those marked temporary ones OK if you need time. If/when you have the end plain cut the end you have off! Now strip that casing off, if you have a tiny torch or soldering iron after twisting it nice solder it just that much more a forever fix. There once was an easier one I don't even see on the web sold for quick do this soon be done with the problem or have parts to do both ends........ Tom

Yeah either cut back to clean cable or dope them up with flux and solder/tin them with the old 50/50 solder just as the clamp likes them , wipe them off good before they cool .

Last note this is about over. I'm having to buy better solder and flux on line, from China to get lead/zinc mix and soldering paste that works much better. It's highly acidic, smell horrible and illegal to sell to MA at least so have a ton on hand. IDK - if you don't have good hot iron not tried yet is a torch flame by Lenk #LMJ-280 see one. It's like a small lighter but does somehow get hotter was under $10 uses butane small as a cig lighter. Just the idea I have no luck in tough spots with what the sell here others do? It's the lead (Pb) and really nasty solder thing it does stink bad :-) Tom
