2004 Cat Sedan DeVille V8 136,318 Check Coolant level Sign In

This notice came on and the coolant level is up with recommended coolant, and we can not turn it off. I been told it can be the level sensor or the temp sensor. How can I tell if it is a level sensor or a temp sensor?

Arggh! These are their own bird sometimes. It's probably low in radiator and you are checking a recovery bottle with a pressure cap? If connector between radiator and or cap failure lost integrity it wont return coolant to radiator and end up low but read fine looking at just the bottle which may not change level now from cold to warm marks - does it?
If not it's telling you the truth and you risk an overheat you don't need at all! Then right away find out why and where the problem is,

The coolant level sensor is inside the surge tank. Seen quite a few where the float sinks to the bottom or if you drain the system the float sticks at the bottom and smacking on the tank unsticks the float.

You can test the float sensor voltages at the connector, but it's a pain to get to without removing the tank. The light green wire should have either 5 or 12 volts on it. When the light green wire is grounded ( float up), the coolant level message shouldn't be on. The black wire is ground. If you jump the light green to black and the message goes away, but comes on when plugged into the level sensor, the sensor is faulty or stuck down. You can only get the sensor by replacing the tank.

Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

We replaced the cap. It seems as if it was losing coolant after 3 - 4 short trips. Could not tell if the float was sticking, but new cap seems to have done the job.

Thanks for the help.
