2004 Ford Expedition Stalling Sign In

Hi, I have a 2004 Ford Expedition Eddie Bauer with the 5.4 Liter Engine. I have 101,000 miles on it. Today after stopping at a stop sign and preparing to accelerate it lost power and stalled. It took several minutes to get it to restart, but then it did and several minutes later did the same thing. I was finally able to get it home and now we are trying to figure out where to start. Any help is most appreciated!!!!

Re: 2004 Ford Expedition Stalling Sign In

step 1 would be to scan for codes, scans are free....
tell us which engine- its history, any modifications.
then its basics- spark at all plugs, fuel pressure, injector pulses, vacuum, compression etc

Thank you for the info. I was wondering though if the check engine light is not staying on would it show any codes?

Kev2 will be back - I'm just up making coffee early. Yes, codes can be pending without the check engine light on and do get them read AND please post the #s.

Basis as he said. I've found vacuum elbows weak and leaking early on these for some reason, the larger ones ~10mm I.D. in particular.

Anything on the list so get codes. You can make sure light works by turning key to run without starting it first as if that is out it would be it's own problem first,

Thank you for the ideas. We heard it could be the idle control valve so my husband changed that and did some cleaning of stuff. It drove great this weekend and then today stopped again. Grrrr.

Any codes stored? If so, what are the code numbers? IAC won't cause stalling on acceleration.

The check engine light isn't staying on, it only comes on when it stops. We haven't checked it for codes though, would they show up if the light isn't staying on?

Re: 2004 Ford Expedition Stalling Sign In

Some codes won't cause the light to illuminate, but you might not have access to those codes with an OBD2 code reader. If there are no codes present, finding out what is causing it to stall can be difficult if the thing fires right back up after it had stalled.

If it doesn't restart for a period of time, it is easier to figure out what is causing it not to start. The problem is most DIY don't have drive-ability diagnosis experience or the tools to figure out the culprit without playing the guessing game.

If you can get it to act up, you need to check for spark, injector pulse, and fuel pressure when it doesn't want to start. Finding out what is missing gives you direction on which system to drill down into.

Thanks for the info. It is strange. It goes to start back up but it can take a few minutes and then it will finally start. It turns over but doesn't start and then finally it will. We are thinking that we are going to have to take it in.

That is a good thing that it take time for it to start up. That gives you or the tech enough time to hopefully figure out what is missing. Otherwise you would need to get your hands on a digital storage lab scope.

when it does not start try the basics - spark at all plugs, fuel pressure, injector pulses, vacuum, compression etc
