Hi Folks, I have a 2005 mercury Monterey van with a check engine light on. Autozone diagnosed either a mass air flow sensor or O2 sensor problem. I tried cleaning the air flow sensor with air flow sensor cleaner but check engine light is still on. Any suggestions on which part is more likely to be at fault? The van runs and drives great otherwise but need to pass emissions. Thanks in advance for any input Links from other site removed.

First of all, understand this. the employees at Autozone are wanna be mechanics that couldn't diagnose a cat with the runs. What you need to post here is the exact code numbers being stored and professional will advise you. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

OK, that indicates a lean condition that the computer has reached it's adaptive limits and can no longer compensate for it. I have seen these codes often on a Ford and it is nearly always caused by a severe vacuum leak, usually associated with the PCV line or one of the rubber connectors that feed vacuum to other components. They can sometimes be hard to spot because when the engine is running the suction pulls a hole open and then the hole closes when the engine is shut off. With the engine idling, listen very closely for hissing noises and try to follow them to their origin.

They also like to leak between the upper and lower intake when cold. You may need to have it smoke checked to find the leak. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.
