Granddaughter has my 2006 Toyota Camry (4 banger) at school. About 115k miles on it. She claims her gas mileage has gone down and temp gauge does not go up to halfway anymore (runs cold). She says car seems to run a little rough. Her boyfriend thinks it’s may be the thermostat.

Questions:
1. Is this likely in opinion of those who know about these things?
2. How hard is it to swap out the thermostat? Her BF says he’s done it on his car (older BMW) before.
3. any brand recommendations for replacement? I will probably get one online if that’s what is needed.

Thanks

A colder engine will cause a richer mixture but you need to find out if the engine is actually cooler or if the sensor is acting up. Use a laser thermometer at the outlet housing to find out.

Thanks. sounds like I should have her take it to a shop to have someone check it out.
