We purchased a 2006 3.5 liter Pacifica new in 2007 and it's usually has a slight "Tick Tick" noise upon start up from the engine. It always goes away in a few minutes once the engine warms up. It sounds like a sticky lifter and varies with RPM. It never shows up if engine is already warm or unless it's less the 60 degrees C outside. Sometimes when it's cold and I start the car and it's ticking, I can turn it off and restart it instantly and it usually stops the ticking?

I have always changed the oil and filter every 5k with full Castrol synthetic using whatever blend that the retailer has. What does this sound like the problem is to you? Would it help if I went to a thicker or thinner old blend of Syntech like 5w50 versus 10w40 or???

Thanks!

If this is a sticky lifter and you've been using synthetics it would be a first for me and sound just like that. You could probably tell by oil cap view or dipstick what the lack of sludge is without much trouble.

I'd check oil pressure by gauge on engine as I think it could be too low for some reason.

If piston slap that's more of a dull thunking that goes away when warm.

Suggest you stick with the viscosity the vehicle was calling for. The wider the range the more additives to make it behave that way synthetic or not so you are getting less oil and more who knows what to make it behave in a wider range.

If just a real only sticking lifter and not bad it would go away with more frequent oil changes. I'm not into additives to speed that up.

Other is maybe a cam lobe is just worn and takes a while to be close enough for hydraulic lifter(s) to be in spec. Hard to know that without some real work,

T

TG: It shouldn't be buildup or sludge as it's done that since it was new. Also, change oil and filter every 5k with full synthetics. CW

I doubt sludge too by what you are saying. This could be something else altogether going on and just can't know from here so easily. Some of this stuff that goes away techs would ask to use the vehicle and witness it and be ready for testing or just know by a sound sometimes.

If there's a real mechanical problem it probably won't get better. Good luck,

DO NOT deviate from the recommended viscosity. The engine are engineered around the oil. The are made with much tighter clearances now and some even use some spray nozzles so a thicker oil can cost you a motor.

HT: I dumped a pint of Sea Foam cleaner in to try and unstick what sounds like a sticky lifter. Will change the oil tomorrow using the factory recommendation of 10W-30 full synthetic Castrol and a new filter to see if your comment gets it done. CW

You have to be careful doing that also. If your engine has any type of sludge build up in it, adding that stuff will cause the sludge to break up in chunks that will get caught in places that you don't want it and can cause an even bigger problems.
