2006 Hyundai Tucson 2.0 desiel. Coolant flush help
|
|

2006 Hyundai Tucson 2.0 desiel 4wd. 225,000km. Bought a used car and there is muddy coolant in the coolant reservoir tank. No milky substance under oil cap. No smoke. Dipstick there is no milky residue. I want to try a diy coolant flush (first time). My plan is to drain, fill with distilled water for flush, refill coolant, burp out air. Also I know where the drain valve is through the owners manual (although seems hard to get too). *Watched a bunch of YouTube* Problem I see so far. The radiator cap is directly on the coolant reservoir. All of the videos I have seen is where the radiator cap is directly on the radiator (no radiator cap on the radiator?). So it looks like the only want to flush and refill is through the reservoir tank. The hose looks very thin. Would this be the correct way to do it? After draining the coolant will this reservoir be able to fill the radiator with the flush, the coolant fill, and the burping of air?

You are just wasting your time. You will never get that cleaned out that way. First you have to determine what clogged it in the first place and resolve that issue. It could be deteriorated coolant but that is not likely. It is more likely that the internal transmission cooler is leaking and trans fluid mixed with the coolant. That alone could be resolved with a lot of work and a new radiator but the bigger concern is if coolant got into the transmission, you can consider the transmission junk because it destroys the clutches. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Thanks for the reply! Just checked the transmission fluid. It is clear! The person I bought the car only had oil change records. He was consistent with that. But he never had a coolant flush. Car runs smoothly. No over heating. Heater works. I guess the real question I have is what is normal protocol (coolant flush) when the radiator cap is on the coolant reservoir and there is none on the radiator?!

Is all that supposed to mean something? It does not. Not flushing coolant does not cause sludge. The only coolant that ever had a sludge problem is Dexcool which is GM coolant and not what your car uses.

Thanks for the reply again! I am hoping it is just deteriorated coolant. But obviously I don't know much about these things I checked the transmission fluid because you suggested coolant could have been mixed with that? Anyways thanks for the response. Just trying to figure out how to do a coolant flush and gave as much info about the car I could give. Seems like my post has rubbed you the wrong way. Not my intention at all.

No, you are just being very naive to what it's going to take to solve your problem. A simple flush won't even begin to cut through what's in that radiator and you have not yet determined what it is in the radiator which will determine what methods will be necessary to remove the deposits. I'm trying to point you in the right direction to solve the problem but you seem to want to over simplify the issue. If the issue is actually deteriorated coolant which only Dexcool has ever had a history of doing it is a water based treatment to remove it. If it is trans fluid or engine oil it will require a totally different approach to clean it out.

Go ahead and just change coolant IMO don't flush it will just cause problems. Do use distilled water (cheap enough) for the mix. If this holds pressure (has to) it would or should be fine use the coolant it calls for IDK this vehicle didn't know nor deal with diesels despite it is Summer they are a pest in Winter so few around me deal with them, T

Simply draining and filling the cooling system will not move any sediment at all.

If any? New should loosen up any that would ever flush out without the mistake of too much pressure. Folks (diy) use garden hose pressure. No telling what pressure that is or how you'd approach it? It's heater works is a clue it isn't full of junk now. I'd suggest learning how to know you've purged all air let new antifreeze with those additives do their thing do this over again in a year it should be dirty again is fine just not debris. Bet it stay clear then you may have to remove recovery tank and clean that separately. Also know the waste antifreeze is a total hazmat - discard that properly right away as animals if in some open container will think it's sweet will really harm or kill them! If not equipped or the right place send it out it's done all the time...….. T

As stated, he still doesn't know what this is even contaminated with. If this is any sort of oil based substance flushing with coolant or water will do absolutely nothing. If it is Dexcool caking it will take numerous flushes with chemical and the thermostat removed. If it is rust because of running it with water and not enough coolant, it will never come clean.
