Hey All,
Please help!
2007 Ford Focus LS, 1.8L. Approx 80,000kms.
It won't start, but the context/things tried:
- Battery is NOT drained. Sh!tty Voltmeter is telling me about 10V (down to 9 with headlights on)
- When I try to kick it over, it will give one, lame, spin and then start "clicking"
- The lights headlights dim when trying to kick it over
With that, Haynes manual suggests it's either a starter motor issue, or there is "considerable resistance in the circuit".
I have noticed that one of my headlights is out.
Can anyone please help? In particular:
- Would 10V be fine to start the motor if the starter motor IS fine?
- Could the headlight out stop the ignitiion?
- Other suggestions?

Have the battery tested and make sure that your connections are clean and tight. It appears your battery is discharged if you get only 9 volts on your meter with the headlamps on.
Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Is this the original battery by any chance? It's too old to expect it to have enough amps as shown by the low voltage if so and can happen to newer ones too.
Test it but if that old I'd toss it as you are stressing out the alternator when it does start if ever without help of some sort right now.
Symptoms classic for plain low charge or poor battery,

Hey gents,
Thanks for the replies. I looked up battery information this morning and was surprised that by about 11.89V the battery is essentially discharged!
While I'm happy to get a new battery - I want to know how to make sure there is not another issue so that it won't just happen again. Would you have any advice?
And again - any thoughts on if the headlight out could be connected to the issue?

Voltage is only part of the issue. A 12v battery, fully charged just sitting there should read dang close to 12.6v but speaks nothing of how powerful it is in amps.
A 9v smoke detector battery is the full 9v which by volts might be enough to run if powerful enough but of course isn't.
Any connection to blown bulbs if or when is either the bulbs just have been used enough time or now rare voltage spikes over the limits can blow them and other devices throughout.
Batteries for automotive use flake inside and with time and use lose the original amps they were rated at sharply dropping off (many) @ 3-4 years for dependability. Too important IMO to ignore,
