The car has always had occasional trouble starting, but now it is good and dead. I tried jumping it, that did not work. It did also start to develop a problem with the headlights. They would shut off suddenly. They could be turned back on by trying the switch several times. Ordinarily I would replace the battery, but I read that you don't do that with the hybrid engine. Thanks in advance for your help.

There a two different types of battery in your car. One is a 12 volt lead acid battery and the other is a 200 volt NIMH battery. You don't want to be messing around with anything on the HV battery side. If there is a problem other than the 12 volt battery causing your no start, I suggest you let a repair shop that repairs hybrid or let the dealer check it out for safety reasons. You have to understand that the engine is started by the same electric motor/generator that moves the vehicle. The two electrical motor/generators are powered by the high voltage battery pack and not the 12 volt auxiliary battery. The 12 volt auxiliary battery supplies power to certain systems and will cause the HV system to not power up if it is discharged. You can tell because the dash lights will be dim or go out when you hit the brakes. You can have the auxiliary battery tested because it is basically a regular automotive battery. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thank you, So there is a chance that the problem is caused by the 12V battery being discharged. My next move then will be to take that battery for testing. That's a start at least. Thanks again.
