I have a 2008 Silverado with the 5.3 L with 102,440 miles on it . Last weekend I drove a few blocks to the store and all of a sudden it started running real rough and vibrating. I looked at the gauges and all seemed to be ok except the engine light was blinking. Turned it off immediately. I went ahead and got groceries and drove it on home . Sounded like a wop wop wop wop. Next morning call shop and they tow it. They tell me its gonna need $4200 in repairs. Replacing both sides of lifters ,machine shop etc. I tell them I dont have that kind of money. They say well. we can try a BG Treatment blablabla for 100. and it may work for a little while. They call me about an hour later and say youre good to go. I was thrilled. So I go pick it up and am a mile into my drive home and it starts it again. Wife is behind me ,I pull over and she pulls in beside me and we say screw it lets just drive it home and regroup. I slowly putt along ,engine is saying wop wop wop wop and the engine light blinking and about 2 miles later and it starts running good again and light stops blinking. Im thinking well hell yeah . So for a few days throughout the day I dealt with this 2 miles of good running and 2 miles of wop wop wop wop with engine blinking. So the next day I get the bright idea to unhook the battery for 30 mins. I did that and it ran perfect for about 20 miles and then it started back to wop wop wop wop. . So for a week now, I have been dealing with this engine issue. Anyone have any advice? Please help! I dont have very much money because my taxes have to be paid . Thanks in advance!

Don't drive a vehicle with CEL blinking just safely get if out of harm's way if you can at all. What's with ALL lifters gone bad all at once? Hmmmm - but a price was given not really a diagnosis which is what it needs. Code readings may be limited since disconnecting battery but a better clue of what's going on is needed. Understand describing a noise or even posting one isn't like witnessing it but something must have been noted for those bucks one would hope? Lifters wouldn't just all snap out of it either and behave so suggest another diagnosis + perhaps a different shop, T

Thanks for your response! My deal is why is it ok for a few miles?By the way, the wop wop wop wop sound is coupled with deminished power and vibration. Then all at once it will stop blinking and start running fine with no sound or vibration. Like nothing at all is wrong .In my mind if the lifters are bad then shouldnt it be making the noise all the time and not like the exact intervals throughout the day each day.

I can't know exactly what you were told and why so much $$. Things sure do cost that much and deserve an explanation. I'm also trying to think of a mechanical thing that would break such that replacing it would be suggested then quit the problem totally as per what you said? Tons of things can make an engine misfire, run like total crap like not fire fuel an electrical issue and maybe self correct for moments but physically broken is broken and doesn't heal so that's why I suggested another diagnosis. Check the shop or tech for credentials and reputation just because. There should be a clear understanding of what is wrong and why it will cost what lower estimates or higher what the heck is the core problem? T

One reason the engine improved after disconnecting the battery is because it would reset all the adaptable mixture controls and the fuel mixture may have some effect on the misfiring. I really think you
need to get a second opinion. The first suspect for a sudden misfire is

What is the trouble code number? 5.3L with active fuel management are known for lifter issues. Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I'm asking! Is this the one that cuts out cylinders when load permits be cancelling valves? OMG - I've heard they did that again since the V8/6,4 - Cadillac only on a 4.1 liter that didn't end up working out or that popular. Only knew it cut out whole cylinders via some trick with lifters? Tom

When active fuel management is active the PCM turns off cylinders 1,7,6,4. If you have a misfire on any one of those cylinders and it isn't spark or fuel related, it more than likely has to be an issue with the active fuel management system. Its easy to find out if there is a AFM issue by removing the rocker cover and watching the rocker of the affected cylinder. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3uJmx9qEqYw Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

Thanks. Family owns one I rode in new in 2008 just told it did that. No clue and it's kept over 2,000 miles from me so that ends that, Tom
