In that you said you weren't very mechanically inclined (which is fine) at least you are noticing a problem. Know that a belt driven item's pulley/bearing shouldn't be that hard for a tech to find - even quickly in most cases without much guessing so probably wasn't taking you too seriously? Noise getting worse and power/RPM affected. It's no longer a wait and see game I suggest you find the right shop/tech right away to diagnose this and how serious it could be if/when something broke. I'm thinking valve timing and how it's driven unseen. IMO might be early by miles but not time IMO it's long enough for a problem with a belt for some. The web is great but not a replacement for hands on checking in person by a qualified tech and suggest you do so. If the wrong thing break a small problem could really become a huge expense you could avoid by acting quickly, T

You shouldn't be telling them to inspect anything. They know how to do their job. You just need to explain the symptoms properly. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Do more homework on WHO or WHERE to take it. State what you notice and let them find out why. I would just ask that you be contacted if something involved - choose some $$ limit for a call or just fix it. I/maybe WE don't know from here. It can be scary and intimidating but you just have to put trust in the person or place. If you wildly don't believe something outrageous go get a second opinion but don't discuss the first opinion. This like any service, trade or what have you could pull fast ones one you but totally IMO the vast majority of techs are proud to find a problem, fix it and make you happy. This can be a thankless impersonal profession so if you are happy let them know. If back for something else ask for the tech who pleased you the first time. You have no idea at some shops you never meet a customer, bust you azz all day smelling like exhaust pipe all tired out with no thanks. If all goes well you get the issue fixed and they make a new customer for routine things. Good luck, Tom
