2009
Volkswagen Jetta
2.5L
183,000

I'm working on a friends Jetta and trying to get it back on the road. It died on him suddenly 1/4 block from his moms house one day and has not run properly since. It starts up and runs just fine for about 5-10 minutes and then spontaneously shuts off and won't run again until I try it another day, or he tries it hours later. I'm damn near 100% certain that it's the fuel pump, but I want to check with pros before I have my buddy drop a benji on a part.

I hooked up a fuel gauge to the rail and I tried to see what happens with the pressure when it dies, and it drops about 5psi after the motor shuts off. I lifted up the rear seat before it shut off and I could hear the fuel pump running just fine until it and the motor shut off at about the same time. I have him try to start the motor and I can hear the sound of the pump sort of wind up and then another sound like its winding down.

Like I said, I'm certain it's the fuel pump, but I wanna make sure that it couldn't possibly be something else before money is invested, you know.

Thank you, guys.

That's not difficult to determine if you have a fuel pressure gauge attached when it won't start. Simply look at the gauge. It needs to be a minimum of 55 PSI.

The gauge didn't move, spike, nothing after the motor stopped working. It dropped 5psi and it stayed that way.

You still are not answering the question.

After it stalls and you are trying to restart it, what is the fuel pressure reading?

I did. I dropped 5psi after the motor stopped running and stayed that way even when we tried to start it.

Attempting to start it neither dropped it or increased it. As long as there is nothing else that would prevent the fuel pump from working other than it's overheating and broken, i.e. something electrical, a computer thing, anything, then I'm gonna tell him to buy a new fuel pump for me to install.

I know this is probably a dumb question to ask cause I'm sure that the fuel pump is the culprit, but I was also sure that a broken timing belt was the reason my other buddy's car wouldn't run, but three months, a new timing belt kit and other parts later it was still scrapped cause neither myself or this forum could figure it out. I just want a second opinion.

OK, I've asked you 3 times what the actual fuel pressure was while cranking and you either refuse to answer or you don't even have a gauge.

If you don't post an actual pressure reading we won't be going any further.

60. It drops to 60 from 65 and does not move. It drops 5psi after the motor quits and neither goes up or down. The pump makes a sound like it's spooling up, the needle doesn't move at all, and then it stops making any noise despite the fact that we're still trying to crank the motor.

OK, so that pretty much rules out the fuel pump as the problem.

Your idea about a timing belt could be accurate but you would hear a different cranking sound when trying to start it due to the lack of compression but it wouldn't run for 5 minutes so that would pretty much rule that out too.

If the car has a tachometer look to see if that is working while the engine is cranking.

You may have to resort to testing spark and injector pulse while it's cranking and not starting

HT has given you some good test to run. I would suggest buying a spark tester.
A quick test would be the shoot some throttle body cleaner down the intake and see if the engine will run for couple of seconds on that. If it does that then you have nailed it down to a fuel problem.

I assumed you ruled out the possibility of it being out of gas By tossing a gallon in it.

Ok, I've a big update on the car, and hopefully this will close this all out.

On the day after my last post I worked on the car again and decided to check for spark. After removing just one of the ignition coils I found oil all over the plug chamber, and grey rvc puddy coming from underneath the gasket, second chamber I checked out was the same. After cleaning oil out of the places it shouldn't be, I put it back together and tried to run the motor, and it didn't just run for 5-10 minutes, it ran for about 30+.

I also got a code reader the next time I worked on it and it gave me 3 main codes:
P0606
P0321
P0322
P0321 and 22 are both tied to the crankshaft sensor which, if bad can cause the car to start roughly, not start at all, or just spontaneously stall. I replaced the sensor, cleared the codes, turned the car on and drove around my friends neighborhood for a few minutes to check things out and it's running fine so far.

P0606 hasn't come back since, but he's prepared to pay to have a new PCM installed if need be. So, right now, I think it's fixed. He's gonna drive it to his soft ball game tonight and I think that's gonna go well.

Thank you, gents.

I've got a quick question for you guys right now about work I'm gonna do on my town car next month. Has anybody on the forum ever replaced the blend door actuator on 1994 Town Car? I'm only asking now so that I know if I should ask about it later when the job actually gets done.

Thanks again.

Please start a new question for the different vehicle with a different problem.
I'll close this one now.
