2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

2010 Ford Mustang 4.0 L V6, ~20k miles (bought new)
Note: Quite a few aftermarket parts. Car is frequently maintained (fluids at proper levels, oil changed, routine inspection, etc.)

The below issues have been ongoing for about a year.

Problems:
1. After driving greater than ~30 mph then slowing down to a stop, an audible clunk can be heard when automatically downshifting into first gear (~12 mph). Driving longer and at greater speeds makes the clunk more noticeable. The same clunk can be heard when shifting between drive, reverse, etc. Additionally, when slowing down below ~20 mph, the spinning of the driveshaft becomes more noticeable/vibrations are felt.
2. Car is frequently out of alignment. Front suspension was thought to be the culprit.
3. Grinding has been heard at high speeds (75-80 mph). This has since been fixed by realigning.

Attempts at a solution/observations:
1. Tires have been inspected with no issues (all have been replaced within the past two years)
2. Replaced front suspension bushings. Tightened loose components.
3. Realigned vehicle (multiple times).
4. Noticed metal shards on rear differential fill plug magnet.

Is this a bad U-Joint on the driveshaft? If so, why would this cause misalignment? Are the ring and pinon gears missing teeth/damaged?

Let me know if you have any questions about the aftermarket components. The two most relevant are the driveshaft (which is a one-piece aluminum) and the gears (3.73 ratio). Both installed not long after purchase.

Thanks in advance for any help. I appreciate that you guys do this for free in your spare time.

-Bill

Cars don't just go out of alignment.

Either there are worn parts that were missed and the car never should have been aligned in the first place or it has suffered a hard impact to knock it out. It will have nothing at all do do with your transmission noises as this is a rear wheel drive car and aligning the front end has no effect on the drive train.

Re: 2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

I may have missed something in top post but this is a 20K car with these issues? Sounds like it's beat on badly. What's with that shifting trick?
Magnetic fill plug? Not aware of those but maybe and shouldn't have shards anyway. Where did that come from? Shards in it? That can't be good news.

Alum. driveshaft is rubber between aluminum usually, isolated to absorb vibrations sound like it was hoisted by it and bent perhaps now questionable.
As HT said alignments that often isn't going to change or help anything unless this is driven over such terrible roads and beat to death is what this sounds like bought new and all?

Are you the only one who drives this or don't know?

Makes sense. The front suspension was fixed prior to aligning but it is now out of alignment again.

How have you concluded that it is out of alignment now?

Similar anomalies. When I hit the bump coming out of my driveway (going slowly, of course) I hear a crunching noise like the sound of loose bolts in the suspension.

Re: 2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

Tom,
I am the only driver. It sat in a storage unit for a few years. Driven about half of its life.

Normal paved roads are the only ones driven on. I live in Colorado so it's a summer car. The only time where it could possibly be so out of alignment is on speed bumps but I always take those slowly.

I will admit I accelerate faster than I should. So over the years it may have worn on the gears. But this is a young vehicle. I wouldn't expect so many issues.

What's with that shifting trick?
I assume you're referring to " automatically downshifting into first gear"? This is an automatic, not manual.

The fill plug on the differential has attracted metal shards to it. I don't know why it's magnetic but it is. The shards would indicate gear grinding, correct?

Re: 2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

That is not a wheel alignment problem. That is a suspension problem that should have been corrected before the first alignment was done.

The only thing that is adjustable in your car is the toe-in so you are just wasting your money doing alignments. When you do actually need on, find a different shop as this one is not helping you.

Right, and I thought it was. The Ford dealer fixed the suspension, then the alignment. Alignment may have been caused by another issue but I don't know what.

If you are still hearing noises coming out of the front end, then obviously they did not fix the suspension.

But it was fixed. Didn't hear it for some time, but now it's back. I'm just trying to troubleshoot everything.

What are your thoughts on the first issue?

Re: 2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

If that sound is a tinny, snapping noise, then I would agree with Tom about the aluminum driveshafts separating. They had a big problem with those for a few years.

There is an inner shaft and an outer shaft and if they come apart, they move around inside.

Re: 2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

If that is indeed the issue, would you recommend going back to a stock driveshaft? Or is there a better alternative?

Re: 2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

I don't think you will have that option if it was equipped with aluminum. The replacement part will also be aluminum. They probably corrected the issue by now.

Re: 2010 Mustang Clunking and Vibrations Sign In

Driveshaft: You may never see anything wrong unless you take it out OR "brake stand" (fight engine against brakes) on a lift where wheels are on surface watch it torque.
You should be able to see it's rubber isolated it also (not the problem) doesn't conduct electrical thru it because of that.
The magnetic plug? They were standard for drain plugs not fill plugs. I HAVEN'T NOTICED A DRAIN PLUG IN A DIFFERENTIAL SINCE ABOUT 1960! IDK maybe some do I just didn't notice,
