It's been a while - I hope everyone's well! I bought a 2011 Dodge Nitro a couple of months ago that threw ABS & traction trouble lights on the way home. A bit of Googling seemed to point to wheel speed sensor(s) which look pretty simple to replace, but it wasn't until I bought an OBD scanner this weekend that I got an idea which sensors to look at. Turns out, OBD has registered codes (below) with both rear wheels, both with the speed sensors and tone rings. C1020 Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit C1027 Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Erratic Performance C1043 Left Rear Tone Wheel Performance C1049 Right Rear Wheel Pressure Phase Monitoring C1044 Right Rear Tone Wheel Performance I'm just getting an idea what tone rings are, and if the speed sensors are supposed to be reading the tone rings, it seems like a failure in either one could produce a trouble code in both. Right? How should I proceed with troubleshooting this after doing a visual inspection of the wiring to the speed sensors? I know I shouldn't start throwing parts at it without knowing what's at fault, but speed sensors are pretty cheap and seem easy to replace... should I just try replacing them and then see if the trouble codes recur? Any thoughts would be helpful! - 2011 Dodge Nitro SXT SUV 4D (3.7L V6 SMPI) Odometer: 102,000 miles

I've never seen a bad tone ring unless somebody installed the wrong axle or a bad wheel bearing. The tone ring is solid steel. There isn't much that can go wrong with it. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.
