2013 Ford Fiesta SE overheating Sign In

Howdy all! First off, I am NOT a car guy, so I apologize up front if I miss anything or do not make sense. I have been helping my father-in-law try to fix an overheating issue on his 2013 Fiesta. We have replaced the radiator, cooling fan, thermostat and coolant temperature sensor. Now his cooling fan will not turn on. It runs if we send 12 volts direct to it, but not when it is connected. The AC compressor clutch also is not coming on, but checking with a DIY recharge can it shows no pressure, so that may be another issue. The main thing I'm trying to figure out is the identity of another sensor we can see, but can not get to easily. From the front of the car, it is just to the right and slightly below the thermostat housing. It looks like it runs right into the engine block, and looks similar to the coolant temperature sensor we replaced, but we can't see it well enough to tell for sure. With this info, can anyone help us figure out what part this may be, and if it is worth the hassle of changing given the problems we are having. Thanks a ton folks!

You are approaching this all wrong. You can't continue to just throw parts at it, especially when you don't even understand what the parts are and what they do.

These fans are programmed to come on at specific temps and on some vehicles this temp is higher than you would expect. You need a scan tool with data to see what temp the computer is seeing and whether it is attempting to turn the fan on at the specified temp.

Since you have been fighting this problem for a while and have likely overheated the engine multiple times you may have already fixed the original problem but now have a blown head gasket from the previous overheating. These aluminum engines can't handle overheating and it only takes one time to do severe damage. You really need some local professional help with this.

I completely agree. FIL however keeps refusing to get real help because, "well it wasn't that, it must be this." I'm still trying to convince him to just get it handled right. Again, I know squat about cars so my opinion doesn't matter to him, I'm just a labor helper. I was hoping to figure out at least what the part he's trying to get to is, so I can convince him to not pull half the engine apart to get at it, but he seems dead set. I told him if he does, he's on his own!!!

Smile - no fights with FIL. It just doesn't work that way. Pay if needed to find out WHAT by a pro shop then decide if the BOTH of you want to take it on or can't for lack of the right tools?

It's not good to just take things apart for the sake of it if everything was free about it.

As Hammer Time said and many just don't realize that "aluminum" and or alloys of all sorts just don't tolerate overheating. NOT ONCE if the thing was new.

Other is properly filling a cooling system and KNOWING it's really full not guessing. Almost NOTHING just fills up without absolutely knowing it and what to do if not. I don't mean the tank that says it's in range - NO. Big mistake if apart for anything that messed with coolant for any reason that's void info. It valid for new up to first reason why it went low - any reason - overheating would be one.

You and FIL talk it out the vehicle is relatively new and a waste if making it worse while learning you said it's really NOT your thing is FINE so be it. Just know or show FIL what damage can happen from not paying attention it may not be the generation of engines didn't care could cook on them and nothing went wrong.

That latter is the hard part and up to you :-)

If you want to know what that part is, you at least need to get me a picture of it.

I'll say it again..........parts don't solve all problems. Other issues can be causing your problems.

Understood, and thanks to both of you. I'll try to get a picture, but its buried. He only saw it up close when we changed thermostat, and even then it wasn't a good look.

Thanks again.

The car only has one temp sensor so if you already changed it, then the other one cannot be a temp sensor.
