2013 Hyundai Elantra PZEV Upper (2nd) Air Filter Sign In

Was trying to replace the air filter. It turns out there is a second air filter attached to the top of the housing, in PZEV engine vehicles. It's not meant to be replaced.

A friend thought it wasn't supposed to be there. It got pulled out, and was torn in the process.

I can't even figure out how to get a replacement. Some suggest I don't need to replace it. What do you think?

? Whatever that is you tore/broke it so replace it! It was there for a reason I don't think an air filter rather an air speed or temp sensing mesh you busted up isn't going to run well nor be so cheap IMO to replace.
Basics: It was there, you broke it so replace it (IDK what you broke) and may have to reset the way the car runs you just didn't save a dime changing so much as an air filter - no offense intended at all this nor "friends" who said you don't need it perhaps do better without their suggestions!

It's an air filter. It has an air filter number printed on it in the plastic. It's not a sensor of any kind.

I can't find any site that even offers it. The same exact model of engine and car, same year, with a different emissions standard doesn't even have it installed, stock.

Amazon and RockAuto come up empty.

If you don't know what it is, why are you rebuking so harshly? Maybe my question is reasonable, and maybe his mistake was reasonable.

If that's some "aftermarket" item and you really don't need it get rid of it. Lots of junk stuff is added to make folks think they'll do the car some good, more power or MPG nonsense. If it did the car would come with it.

If you know what it should be like than put it back as OE the way it belongs.
Understood please accept my apology for being harsh it's a dang air filter now all this trouble. I'm seeing the scene better some crap added + trust me if so you don't want that.
Now the job may be find exact parts that might be lost or tossed to do that and undo it! Best bet is an exact up of this, pics and go it that way be sure it's exact,

I don't know if this is an engine not sold in the US but I am seeing only one engine choice (1.8L) for all Elantra models.

I'm not seeing a second filter if this is your setup.

No problem sir. God bless you. :)

You really helped in another thread about this same vehicle, and I am grateful.

Re: 2013 Hyundai Elantra PZEV Upper (2nd) Air Filter Sign In

So, according to forum posts I looked up in the past, this extra filter comes preinstalled on PZEV emissions standard engines by Hyundai.

The ULEV emissions standard engine just has the normal air filter and no upper air filter.

So I think I have three options.

1. Put the slightly torn filter back in, and hope it works fine.
2. Leave it out, and hope it's just there to clean up emissions to meet a standard and the same engine runs without it stock, so it should be fine.
3. Go to a junkyard and find a stock filter still installed on an Elantra.

I really like option 2. Maybe it would even slightly increase gas mileage. But I hoped for a rousing chorus of "yeah, will be fine."

What's wrong with the correct option?

Go to the dealer and buy the correct filter.

Re: 2013 Hyundai Elantra PZEV Upper (2nd) Air Filter Sign In

I'm very poor, and had to borrow all the money I used to repair this vehicle, so I could drive for Uber and pay off loans?

This response was given in another forum. Not meaning to be argumentative. Grateful for everyone who did or tried to help.

Their post:

"That second filter contains activated charcoal.
Its purpose is to capture any fuel vapors left in the intake manifold and cylinders (with an intake valve open) when the engine stops.
Unburned or partly burned fuel is a pollutant.
By the same token, gas tank fumes are captured by the EVAP system, and crankcase fumes are captured by the PCV system.
The engine doesn’t need the filter to work properly, but it was needed to get the PZEV designation."

Dude, you're not buying and engine. It's an air filter. How much can it cost? You haven't even called for a price.

Yes it will effect whether the car passes emissions test if your state has them and it can set a check engine light if it interferes with the EVAP system.
