Can someone tell me how to check/fill the transmission oil on the manual transmission to my 58 Chevy truck? I am starting to get some grinding when shifting and want to check the oil.

Thanks!!!

There should be a drain plug up on the side of the transmission. Remove the plug and check it like rear end. Fill it up just to the bottom of the plug hole.

No specific info for the exact trans but most would have a plug (usually square and could be external or a square hole to use like an extension on that matches to remove) on the side perhaps 2/3rds up when removed you check and add there - kinds like till it just runs out hole when pumped in. There may be a similar plug at bottom to drain it or otherwise you would suck it out thru the regular hole on side,

Thanks much!! Someone has told me maybe the clutch needs adjusting, that that can cause grinding too.

If pushing clutch doesn't disengage till near the floor the adjustment may need to be changed such that the clutch is fully disengaged when depressed down. If the disc or pressure plate has problems or rusty some will drag and have residual turning force on input shaft of trans.

When is it grinding? If you wait a few seconds when truck is stopped it shouldn't grind going into first or reverse which I don't think are syncronized in a 3 speed anyway. 2nd and 3rd should be. When slowing down you do have to wait to shift back to first normally till stopped with the old style or get good at "double clutching" if you want it again before that. That was normal procedure.

Just when is it grinding and in what gear while doing what?
