62 Belair starting problem
1962 Chev Belair original 283 everything original except added headers Awhile back, with original starter, after being driven for half hour to an hour, engine would not start. Acted like battery was dead but had a full charge. At first, after it cooled down for a half an hour or so it would start right up. As time went on it got worse. I put in a brand new starter which turns over much faster than the old starter but it does the same thing. I put it in Sunday, took it for a drive yesterday for about an hour. Came home, shut it off and tried to restart. Making a rapid clicking noise at the solenoid. Came back out an hour later and it started right up. Thoughts? Thanks in advance!!

Start off with the basics, have the battery tested. Make sure the connections are clean, also clean the connections on the block & body for the grounds. If the cables are old, it wouldn't hurt to toss a couple of new ones on. Also when it's not cranking when it's hot, pull the coil wire off the coil and try to crank it....see if that has any affect on it.

Thanks for your response! Battey is good. Ended up replacing the voltage regulator and so far so good.

Hey - glad you found one and it fixed the problem. I'll close this out as solved when done. You can ask to re-open it if wanted. Just one last thing because of age of the thing. If the regulator is on firewall, two screws to side of a cover type save it! You can take those apart clean, adjust and fix the things and paint it up like OE again. At least look inside if that type if burned up forget it other stuff is adjustable and make work that's all. Hard to find I bet? Tom
