73 mustang backfire after throttle gets stuck Sign In

So I have a 73 mustang with a 5.8 351 cleveland and I was driving down the road low speeds and noticed when I came to a stop sign and dried to go again it was getting stuck on higher throttle speeds (1904 edelbrock carb) so I pulled to side kicked it in neutral and it was still really high so I turned it off. Now all she does is spit flames out the carb and no start

Key notes
Replaced spark plugs
Replaced wires
Replaced ignition coil
And tried to change fuel to air ratio and still nothing

Please help asap

I trust this is a remarkable redone car or mostly original as highly desirable?
Suggestions: Don't to tossing parts unless called for the new is probably worse than what you threw out, don't, save old parts.
Edelbrock did not make a carb with Ford for these originally I think most were with or thru Holley so that makes for snags.

Back fire suggests it's dumping fuel while having a serious vacuum leak or cable isn't sprung well to return. If altered to non automatic choke know and understand how to set it hope you have info on alterations.
If you've fussed with timing check where it is and was last working properly. Lowered octane now vs when it was new did create a hassle for many if this is still a high compression engine??

Plain backfire control is controlling excessive fuel and vacuum leaks. It could have heavy floats from fuel saturation.
Owners have to know what they have for these now 1973 the switches were on to dump factory muscle cars began years of malaise the Mustang became a Mustang II in 1974 was a glorified Pinto no less - what a bummer if you like these for what they were,

I don't know what you are trying to do there but that can't be done without replacing internal parts to the carb.

All these things sounded like carb issues from the start. I don't know why you were messing with ignition parts.

Fuel mixture: A choke is for that for starting a cold engine. That's about the end of adjusting mixture ratio. If that is automatic tell us what shuts it off? Heat from intake, coolant hose or exhaust manifold sucking in hot air? That type failed at manifolds quickly. A lot of people rigged up manual chokes and failed miserably that changes a step cam to an increasing cold idle cam (smooth, no steps) not in play when warm may still be either type.
My point is you can't just bolt down a carb that never belonged without all the other things being right on the mark. A simple throttle cable will bust a carb is out of adjustment.
You could restrict the top plate from opening and force it rich, OR it can't open and is stuck.

Cable or rods to run throttle at carb for throttle action? I'm asking. If cable thru floor/carpet that's maybe redone or moved it can rub there screw up all sorts of things.
Who put on that carb and did it ever run properly? It wasn't of any help vs the original rather the opposite made it worse and harder to deal with,

Tom
