Start with charging the battery for an hour. Then any tests performed will be accurate. You will need a cheapy multimeter. Connect the meter leads to the battery. Red to positive, Black to negative. The battery should be around 12 volts. Have an assistant crank the engine over. The battery voltage should not drop below 10 volts. Once the engine starts, the battery voltage should jump up to around 14 - 14.6 volts. This shows the alternator is working properly. If at this point, you should have the battery tested at a shop to see if it is weak. A good rule of thumb is if the battery is 5 years old or more, it should be replaced anyway. Good luck.
