When the engine is hot it back-fires out the carb when you step the gas. It idles fine it is like the vacuum advance is not working. When the engine is cold it runs fine. Does anyone have an idea. I don't want to put too much into the car. Good transportation, easy on gas.

Some maybes: The egr valve may not work which can control knock which might give you a backfire. Engine may have a lot of carbon build up making compression to high and hot spot that pre ignite. Plugs would show some variation and evidence sometimes with that. Make sure all vacuum lines are good especially those that sense or make controls from engine temp at thermostat and look for anywiring that may have broken or connections that don't look good. That's some stuff that might be a cheap and easy fix. It's always worth checking those things in any older car so nothing is lost for checking that out, T
