91 Toyota, Fuel pump keeps dying
|
|
|
Alright, so I have a 91 Toyota Landcruiser. It sat in the woods for 4 years or so, and I've finally gotten it out of there and finished most of the repairs. Trouble is, the fuel pump won't last for more than a couple days. I've gone through 4 pumps now. I take them out of the box and test them, they work fine. I install them and start the vehicle up and it runs perfect. I let it sit over night, and then try it again in the morning. Low and behold, it won't start. So, I take the pump out and hook it to a 12 volt battery, and sometimes I can get them to run again by beating on them, other times they won't run besides an initial try. The pump is getting power, someone else in the house supposedly put fresh gas in, but green corrosion does get on the pump assembly sometimes after being in the tank. Though not so much this past few times. Any ideas?

Well, forgive my ignorance, but will exposure to corrosion ruin a pump in that short amount of time? Yeah, something obviously is, but I would have thought corrosion would need more time to do its work...

Here's a quote from a parts outlet about these and other pumps..... "Notes: *** Caution *** a fuel pump is more likely to fail if installed without a new strainer and filter. warranty valid only if strainer is replaced at the same time as the fuel pump." Either you have a whole bad batch or this pump it burning itself up inside with junk. Depending on the inside design some pumps in general with croak in no time if run dry! That could be the strainer quickly clogs or out of fuel situations. I think you should look into a new tank for this if you expect it to last, T

Anything foreign that gets sucked into a pump will ruin it. If the tank is not perfectly clean, the pump will get trashed. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ We offer help in answering questions, clarifying things or giving advice but we are not a substitute for an on-site inspection by a professional.

Yes, it sure ain't going to last too long if the inside of your gas tank looks like this: Since we volunteer our time and knowledge, we ask for you to please follow up when a problem is resolved.

I guess it would be fine if you used a "frog pump".

The pump I'm installing now is a Bosch. Here are pictures of what I'm dealing with. Same consensus? http://www.flickr.com/photos/28709586@N03/11876376504/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/28709586@N03/11875962885/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/28709586@N03/11875948325/

I'm not sure what you're trying to show us. You don have some corrosion on the wire connector that needs to be wire brushed off.

My goal was to show you what going on, whether you still advised replacing the tank. I can clean the leads again, but I did make them golden a couple weeks ago. I'm trying to learn. I've done a bit of my own mechanic work, but I'm not very experienced. Obviously ;)

If there is ANY contamination in the tank that can't completely and permanently removed, then the tank has to be replaced.
