Year of vehicle: 1991 Make of vehicle: Chevrolet Model of vehicle: Z-24 Cavalier Engine size: 3.1 Mileage/Kilometers I have read the manual for the car and it recomends taking it to a dealer to have the starter replaced as it has a learning mode. I am assuming this is an electronic starter as a mechanical one doesn't need to learn as far as I know. are there 3rd party scanners available.

The relearn; I think they’re talking about is because to safely replace the starter you should disconnect the battery. Any time the PCM (computer) looses battery feed/power, adaptive measures the PCM has learnt, are lost. No equipment is required for the relearn on this vehicle. After the repair; go out and drive the vehicle at varying speed allowing engine to come up to temperature. It may run a little goofy at first but it should relearn idle and normal driving habits all on its own. Dan. Canadian "EH"
