I have a 91 chev half ton 4x4 5.0 engine with 227000 miles on it. I am looking for a diagram of the front differential. Last week I heard a noise slight grinding noise coming from the driver side front. I got the truck up on jack stands checked the axles and those are fine, so I grabbed the driver side and wiggled it around to see if it was the axle bearing. There was slop there so I dropped the driver axle checked the stub axle going into the diff for play but there wasnt any, so I tugged gently on it and the darn thing slid right out of the diff. I slid it back in and spun it and it feels fine. Now I dropped the passenger side axle and that bearing feels good, spun that side and feels good. Then I turned the front drive shaft and everything feels fine. I noticed when I took the driver side axle off that there was a wear mark on the axle flange where it must have slid out of the diff while driving and rubbed on the frame. I dont know much about defferentials, but I am guessing there is some sort of clip internally that holds the axles in. My question is what kind of damage can this clip or retainer do? Also I would like to tackle the job myself so if anyone has a diagram or knows where I could get one I would appreciate it. Thank you for your time. Jimmers
