I TOOK MY LUMINA IN TO TEST THE ALTANATOR, BECAUSE IT WAS OVER CHARGING. THE PLACE I TOOK IT TO SAID THEY COULD NOT TEST IT BECAUSE IN 1992 GM DECIDED TO EXPERIMENT WITH THE POLARITY OF SOME MODELS, SOOOOOOO I TOOK IT TO GM DEARLERSHIP, THEY SAID YES THAT WAS TRUE. WICH I STILL HAVE NO IDEA WHAT THE HECK IT ALL MEANS!!!!!!!!!! WHAT I DO KNOW IS MY BATTERY LIGHT FLASHES ON AND OFF AND MY CAR GOES ALL IRRATIC. AND THEN DIES. DO I HAVE TO REPLACE THE ALTINATOR???? IF SO DOES ANY ONE OUT THERE HAVE STEP BY STEP DIRECTIONS OF REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION OF THE ALTANATOR IN A 1992 CHEVY LUMINA Z34??????? I SURE LOVE MY CAR BUT IT SURE IS A STUBBORN #@@###@#$#!!

Reverse polarity means positive ground. TMK since 1956 or 7 no car was made without being 12V neg ground. Individual parts may be wired reversed but I don't know of any. I do own a 6V pos ground vehicle which is a mind warp for jumping it when you put a pos cable on the body of it for ground???? GM and others have done some dumb a$$ things but I don't think that's true. You can by mistake charge a battery backwards from only totally dead but I can't believe a car would ever run with that---- never tried and don't! T

First take bulb out of any hood light. Then disconnect neg on battery. Now you can disconnect the alternator's electrics. Move one to remove the belt and any obstructions to access a couple bolts that hold the alternator. Takes some fancy tools sometimes to get at stuff. If you don't have them you may do better to get help with it even for a stupid alternator, T

I have an unending faith that most shops really want to do well by you.Talk to a mechanic about your concerns but let them make the decision of what is wrong. ___________________ Try to be short here: As a young man I borrowed a fairly new car for a 5,000 mile round trip and needed to find a shop at destination for routine service. Just picked one and explained that I was going to care for this car and was amazed at the the attention I got from perfect strangers who knew I couldn't be a repeat customer but was treated so well it set a pace for my own career. I've worked on several cars that I would never see again. Maybe someone here does know some place in Stockton, CA. We'll see. Good luck, T

Let's start over here. What are the problems you are having? Get a multimeter and if on a tight budget you can get one at WalMart for under 10 bucks! If the alternator is good and it sounds that way then we have other maybes to check out. Keep at it, T
