93 Jeep yj

I have a 93 jeep that drops rpms causing a 'check ingine' light to appear. This happens randomly. It clears itself once it is restarted. When I hooked up the diagnostics it came back 'ac clutch short'. Does anyone have an idea what to check first?

Unplug the electrical connector at the A/C clutch. If the code goes away, the problem is the clutch. If the code comes back, you either have a wiring problem, a relay problem, or a PCM problem. Further diagnosis is needed at that point.

Is the 'A/C clutch' code that appears for 'A/C'? Silly question I know, but I don't have A/C. I recently change the water pump and alternator. I wouldn't think either of these would possible cause this, but could they? If I routed the belt wrong? Thank You for the previous info.

Just a note: You almost can't route a belt wrong but they do need to be in exactly the right grooves. Good luck, T

Often times the manufacturer uses the same PCM for vehicles with A/C and without. If the A/C components are not there then these codes will set. We just ignore them because there is no way to keep them from coming back. An A/C clutch code should not kick the MIL. Double check the code the next time it comes back. Also, double check the code definitions because the code may mean something else if the vehicle is not equipped with A/C.
