You've ruled out a lot of stuff. The odor is a clue. Your battery voltage is too low if engine is running when you get those readings and rare but it could be burning up inside and I'm surprised that if that is happening that it recovers at all. If the voltage spikes real high it could shut down electronic controls and may just reset when cooled off. Another problem with some of these is the A/C clutch assy. They melt and wobble and will fall off if ignored and in the mean time belt tension may be inadequate for the alternator so check that out, T

i didnt drive car after i cleaned the throttle body till today, it ran liked a scalded ape !!!!!!!!! , i drove for 2 hours stopping at a store here and there , didnt miss a lick, is 3000 rpm @ 60 mph about right ? napa told me once a month to spray carb cleaner thru throttle body to keep it clean , have you used seafoam at all ? could i take off throttle body and spray aersol seamfoam into intake to clean it better , still a lot of carbon in there, obvisioly the car would be off , let it sit and work then reassemble and start car ??????? napa also said to use rags and carb cleaner to clean throttle body sinse it has a teflon coating inside it never to use any type of brush !!!!! , the smell of burnt cluth or burnt brake smell has disapperaed !!!!!!! the motor is pretty oil and grease covered maybe smell came from a combination of these or the burning carbon ???? i hope this helps someone else with simiular problems !!!!!!! thanks again in advance tdog

LOL, It's been a long time since I rode around on the back of a scalded ape!!!! How do they run anyway? SeaFoam is a strong product. If you try it use it sparingly. I prefer just carb/throttlebody cleaner and some brands work lots better than others. It's not about how clean it looks but how well it works. If you are just seeing like coffee stains that isn't a problem by itself. If you can use carb cleaner with it running (carefully) and don't use rags to clean inside there - NO NO NO! Odors can happen from a greasy, oily engine when it gets hot out the stuff slinkers down and burns off hot engine parts and smells but it should quit that or the leak should be fixed. A bad PCV system or too much blowby (worn engine) will cause good gaskets to leak a little and a little can make a lot of dirt. Once you have this trottle body stable you shouldn't have to do this very often. Check that PCV system from PCV and all hoses to it. If there is oil in the tube that allows some air into the crankcase between air horn and air filter the PCV system can't overcome the crankcase gasses - again the system or worn engine. These alone don't cause direct stalling of the engine right away unless a hose to PCV is really broken, split or has a hole somehow and that would. Check that out, T

car died again after a 30 min drive ,had a/c on ,it seems to happen when im in stop and go traffic or several stoplights in a row. when i finally got it home after dying 6 times and waiting 1.5 hours to cool down, i opened hood and took battery readings while it was running 12.57 to 13.25 . i noticed that cooling fan pulls outside air into the motor compartment , it was extremely hot air going across motor , upper and lower radiator hoses to hot to touch, radiator to hot to touch on top or on bottom. i made a apointment to have cooling system diagnoised it seems that it runs to hot. the clearcoat on the hood is gone and paint faded from heat ? new used car to me , when i bought it there was a new thernostat in the glovebox , do you think it is a cooling problem that starts and cant overcome , when i drive and dont get caught in stop and go it runs fine , yesterday it was 86 degress outside , thanks in advance again tdog

Yeh, If the engine is running hot it can screw up some engine controls that may (obviously) work when cooled down a bit. The radiator feeling hot top to bottom is a clue. Either fan(s) are not working or not enough or the radiator itself is just too plugged to handle it anymore. Flushing it may help. Seems like the thermostat has already been ruled out. Bet this will end up needing a new radiator. Running hot (in even the normal ranges) is not right and real overheating causes lots of problems so avoid that. Some electrical things that don't like it too hot are the coil(s) and the ign module. Most of the time they fail and don't recover but it's possible. Keep at it. I want to hear about that ape again! TOM THE PROBLEM TURNED OUT TO BE A BAD FUEL PUMP ,FORD MECHANIC PUT IN FORD OEM PART, RUNS FINE IN ALL CONDITIONS, NOW A SERVICE ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON , 93 MERCURY TOPAZ 2.3 L ,AUTOMATIC, MECHANIC PUT IT ON COMPUTER AND CAME OUT WITH THESE : CODE 172, 332, 521 , 538, GAS MILEAGE WENT FROM 34.25 MPG BEFORE FUEL PUMP CHANGE, HAS BEEN RUNNING 25.2 MPG, NOW HAS DROPPED TO 21.5 MPG. CHECK ENGINE LIGHT CAME ON AFTER FUEL PUMP CHANGE. I FILL TANK AT SAME PUMP AND TILL YOU CANT PUT ONE MORE DROP IN , DIVIDE MILES PER GALLONS TO GET MPG ? ANY HELP WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED THANKS AGAIN IN ADVANCE ,TOMMY

What happened with the overheating? Did the machanic say what the codes were for - I don't have a list for them here. That's a big difference in gas mileage and that would throw codes. Seems like you are pretty sure of the mpg accuracy. Still want to know if the overheating is all set now. The fuel pump wouldn't cause that, T

I have almost the exact same problem as you TDOG. I had a post a little further down from yours but had no replies (have a look and check out my story). Glad yours came along. I suspected my problem is the fuel pump as well, and your feedback would seem to comfirm it. I'm about to get another tomorrow and hopefully this will sort out my headache. Tom Greenleaf, can you read my posting (Slade - 93Topaz fuel problem) and add your 2 cents worth please. Steve slade25@hotmail.com

code 172 turned out to be a vacum leak in a rubber hose going to a sensor from the egr valve tube . a little nipple broke off on egr tube going to sensor, i remounted it and new hose and runs fine and service engine light went off. mechanic said i would have to bring it back to clear codes , i dont know if he plans to charge again , can i clear codes by myself???. i dont know if codes will affect mpg ??? i will monitor mpg to see if it improves , thanks again tommy , other man with problem send me info if youre fuel pump didnt work thanks tdog

If the CEL or SES light went out the codes will reset themselves after so many starts or maybe miles with no problem. Most cars rest by just disconnecting the battery for a minute or more but you don't have to that I know of unless you have some other issue with it it would remember that code for a while. I think in about 96 model years the car stores history for getting inspected for emissions and that can cause problems getting a new sticker if you reset it too soon before an inspection, T
