Recently at a red light, the Camry (155k miles) shut off. And I couldn't get it to start again. All the dashboard lights are on and the battery is fine. When attempting to start the car, it would crank but not start. I've read somewhere that it could be the timing belt. Any thoughts on that? The timing belt is not something I'd be able to do myself. What are some "easier repairs" I can do to rule out less expensive causes?

Things like timing belts are maintenance and if you have never done that or had it done or don't know it needs looking at and if you don't like the cost just buy a good pair of walking shoes because you may need them, T

First off, remove the distributor cap and crank the engine. If the rotor is turning it means the timing belt did not break. It still is possible that it could have jumped time.
The basics still need to be done. Fuel pressure checked, check for spark at the plugs, check injector pulse.
Start there and post back with what you find so we can go further.
