I have a 94 Cadillac Deville base with the 4.9L and 129,000 miles on it, which I purchased 10,000 miles ago. Since I've owned it, it has always seemed to over-rev when I start it, and when it's cold a banging noise often emanates from the bell housing and the engine visibly jerks a few times while it is revving high (guessing near 1200 RPM).

Today, on my way to work (210 miles), what sounds to me like the same bang and jerk began acting up whenever I would slow down to 10 MPH (exactly) approaching a turn or stop sign. Kind of a ratcheting noise and jerk that clicks 5 or 6 times while the transmission is presumably downshifting from 2nd to 1st.

No codes. No burnt trans fluid (changed 5,000 miles ago). Well maintained vehicle. Any ideas?

Thanks a load in advance...

Not to be sarcastic but......Its been doing this song and dance for 10,000 miles..........and its well maintained ? Sorry had to say that . Now about your problem(s). The over rev could be a gummed up throttle body / IAC . Try cleaning with some throttle plate cleaner, an old tooth brush works good. As for your noise , could be a loose or cracked flywheel or bellhousing . Have a shop do a inspection for a nominal charge. Before it leaves you sitting 210 miles from home.
