94 Dodge Ram Van 250 Sign In

I have a 94 Dodge Ram Van 250. Where is the starter and the thermostat located? Are there any links with diagrams you could point me to? Thanks!

You don't need a diagram. Starter is at the end of the positive battery cable at the engine. Thermostat is at the engine end of the upper radiator hose. What are you up to with this van?

Re: 94 Dodge Ram Van 250 Sign In

Tom,

Thanks for your quick reply. I think my starter is going bad so I am going to try to replace it myself. When I try to start the van, it takes several attempts of turning the key before the engine will turnover. Also, sometimes I have to put the van in neutral to start it. My mechanic tells me this is the neutral safety switch. Do you know where this is located? Is it difficult to replace? In the past it would start right up when I put it in neutral, now it takes several attempts. As far as the thermostat, I think it could be sticking open? My temp gauge barely makes it above ā€œCā€ and the heat is not very warm. Any suggestions? I am not a mechanic but I can usually figure things out with good instructions and diagrams. Thanks for your help!

Of course I'm guessing but I don't think you need a starter just yet but rather the neutral safety switch. It could be at the transmission where the linkage shifts it - don't know for sure. Try looking up the part at AutoZone or another and see if it gives a location or specific instructions for that.

Running cold would almost always be a thermostat stuck open. Because it's a van getting to the thermostat's cover may be a pest. It's really just a housing, gasket and the thermostat that must point in the right direction and most are marked "towards radiator" or you would just put the side with the spring towards the engine. This van is no doubt a pig on gas so the sooner that's done the better as it's using more fuel running cold all the time. That's a straight forward job unless bolts/nuts are so corroded they could break and you don't want that nightmare.

You should be able to jumper the neutral safety switch for a test but you MUST ABSOLUTELY know the vehicle is in park or neutral to start it as it would then start in gear and could just take off on you!!!!

Get yourself a product called "PB" Power Blaster that is a great penetrating oil. For vehicle use not for household as it's too strong. Spray some on the fasteners you expect to need to remove asap and it could save a lot of trouble.

Hit back if you can't find the switch or someone here may know where it is,

Tom,

I looked for the neutral safety switch and can't find it. Is there a diagram somewhere online that shows the location? Thanks.

Wes
