Good Day!

I have a 95 Ford Aspire Four Banger over 100,000 miles on it. For a Long while now (over a year) it has had an irratic Idol on it. It doesn't matter wether it is hot or cold out. Most of the times when I start the car it starts with a high Idol, it eventually calms down when I let is just sit there. But when I go to drive it OMG it revs so high. I havn't put a tach on it to see how high exactally it revs. All I know is when I shift it stays at a high Idol if it doesn't rev higher. I can sometimes get it to decrease when I shift from 5th and play with it a little down to 1st. Can any one give me insight on what could be going wrong? I am almost at the option to buy a new car rather than dealing with an old problem. I have taken it to a local auto store to have them do a Free Diagnostic test, but they tell me it is to old and they can't. Well those monkeys are only paid to plug in a computer. So they tell me that I have to jump the tester box. I have done that and it comes back with an TPS error but doesn't exactally say what part of the system it is. Have done some reading and there is more than one part of that system.

So who's the monkey now? Gees - it's telling you a TPS error! Have you checked that it's plugged in, or ohm tested it?

T

Ps: I suspect you didn't know that TPS = "Throttle Position Sensor"

No, No, I am fully aware of what the TPS is, I haven't tried the OHM test yet. I am just really tired of dealing with the car. So maybe I will test that, the dummy manual will tell me how to do that. One of those stupid 2"x2"x3/4" components run freekin 200$ for the car. I think I could buy the car new for that price Cool. The weekend is coming up, so I will do it then and reply after that.

Ps: Its plugged in !! Smile

Good Day! So I put an volt meter on the darn gadget and it read 5.01 volts before the car was running. Book said 5 volts was what the sensor should read. But when the car idols it should read from .05 to .... don't member right now think 1 volt. But any way when I had the car at idol it still read 5 volts. Last time I checked that would mean that gadget isn't running right. Will change out and get back to you.

Connect an ohmmeter between terminals A & B (upper terminals on TPS). Open throttle to wide open. Resistance should be 5 ohms. Close throttle, resistance should be less than one ohm. If closed throttle resistance is not at spec, loosen mount screws and rotate TPS until resistance is less than one ohm. As you are moving the throttle VERY slowly from closed to wide open, watch your DVOM for a 'glitch', as an open. If you see it go blank at any position, replace the TPS. If no glitches, and you can't adjust it into spec, the Mitchell manual says to replace the throttle body. See attachment.

Okay So I did as Loren said and I tried that. So without da juice on I disconnected the TPS. I tested the Ohms and here is what I gots. No gas = 4.83 roughly, Gave gas = .9. I Tried to move the TPS but Couldn't get it go far enough to get the numbers flipped. So is this a sign I need to replace the throttle body? So the idoling is getting worse now causing the car to almost trip over itself idoling.

So I did the recommended change the throttle body, the TPS, and it still didn't fix it. So one day I was driving down the road on a cold Colorado Morning and saw that the engine was running surprisingly cold. So went and bought a new thermostat for the car and by George if everything didn't clear up I guess on the Throttle Body it is as well controlled by the temperature of the car. Hmmm who could have guessed. So the money that I wasted on everything else turned out to be changing a 10$ Part. Who would have guessed.
