95 Ford ranger 2.3 crank no start Sign In

A couple weeks ago my truck started running terrible so I put new plugs and wires in it. It drove good for about a week and then shutoff on my dad while he was driving. It's getting spark and I've checked the fuses and switched the fuel pump relay. I noticed I couldn't hear the fuel pump prime it would only make a single click sound. So I just put a new fuel pump on and it acted like it was gonna start for me at first then went back to how it was doing. I still can't hear the new pump prime just a click sound. And also I've already checked the fuel filter. And advice would be greatly appreciated

Check your inertia fuel pump shut off switch under the top edge of the carpet on the passenger side. There is a red button on top. See if it has popped up and push it back down.

Re: 95 Ford ranger 2.3 crank no start Sign In

Then it's back to basics.

All "crank, no start" conditions are approached in the same way. Every engine requires certain functions to be able to run. Some of these functions rely on specific components to work and some components are part of more than one function so it is important to see the whole picture to be able to conclude anything about what may have failed. Also, these functions can ONLY be tested during the failure. Any other time and they will simply test good because the problem isn't present at the moment.
If you approach this in any other way, you are merely guessing and that only serves to replace unnecessary parts and wastes money.

Every engine requires spark, fuel and compression to run. That's what we have to look for.

These are the basics that need to be tested and will give us the info required to isolate a cause.

1) Test for spark at the plug end of the wire using a spark tester. If none found, check for power supply on the + terminal of the coil with the key on.

2) Test for injector pulse using a small bulb called a noid light. If none found, check for power supply at one side of the injector with the key on.

3) Use a fuel pressure gauge to test for correct fuel pressure, also noticing if the pressure holds when key is shut off.

4) If all of these things check good, then you would need to do a complete compression test.

Once you have determined which one or combination of these functions has dropped out,
you will know which system is having the problem.

It has spark. I pulled the line that hooks into the filter and then turned the key on and there was no fuel coming out which is what made me put a new pump in. But I still have the same problem, brand new fuel pump and it still isn't priming. Would a old battery cause that?

That means you have to do the electrical testing that should have been done before replacing the pump.

Is your check engine light coming on for bulb check when the key is first turned on?

My lights on the dash work when they want to. Sometimes I have zero light whatsoever on my dash. Here lately I noticed it would randomly ding while driving so I assume the key switch is going out. Would that have anything to do with it?

There is only one specific light I asked about so we still don't know if the EEC relay is working or not.

You're going to have to start testing the fuel pump circuit. I would start at the Inertia switch. Test for power both in and out of that switch during the prime period. Depending what you find there will determine where we go next.
