95 Tercel studdering in 2nd & 3rd Sign In

Hey there!

I'm just wondering if anyone might know something i can try to resolve my issue.

You know when your in 1st gear and nearly at a stop and the car jerks because it wants to stall?

Well, i have recently been getting that in 2nd and 3rd gear while accelerating. It does not seem to want to stall, but that jerking back and fourth happens randomly in the two gears then continues to function properly.

It seems to idle just fine, and each cylinder seems to be firing due to the fact that removing each spark plug cap would make the idle lower.

Are we talking about an automatic or standard for a start? No - I try not to be familiar with choking out an engine with a standard not pushing a clutch and make it stall,

Yes, it's a 5 speed standard.

Sorry, there was not a more accurate way to explain the feeling it is giving.

I try not make it a habit either, but of course I've done it before!

OK. If it was an auto w locking converter they could be the reason. Yes - I think most people have messed up with a clutch or had some fault with one.

Hard to tell whether this is trans or engine performance from here so far. Your test for RPM drop is old as the hills but so am I sometimes just says they all work at least some at idle but doesn't tell the whole story fully at all. If one made no difference we'd be off on a different tangent.

Your best chance at a fast diagnosis is to let a tech drive and feel this in person IMO. Hmmm, 19ish years old, enough miles but picking on just that shift if I understand and intermittent? MIght be tough to peg exactly what or why. My guess is engine performance not trans but highlight "GUESS" on that,

I figured it'd be hard to diagnose as well.

I appreciate the information.

I'm going to take it to a tech Monday afternoon.

Now, I've heard that a Toyota dealership might be the best option as they have a list of common problems with their cars, but to be honest i have never had to use a mechanic. So far, the fixes I've needed we're google'able and easily done.

I'm relatively new to working on cars, but the interest is there.

I'm back. Just "Google" out the place with a good reputation not necessarily a dealer of the make but a place and techs well trained should do. Ask for estimate first and the cost of a diagnostic if you wish to take on whatever is found yourself. Diagnosing an accurate repair before spending bucks throwing parts that may never is the trick even with older vehicles.

The cost of tools and equipment can quickly make sending it out the wiser choice cost wise or if it's declared unreasonable to fix it was money well spent so you didn't waste time and money on it when swapping out would be better. Ha - that excludes those with a love affair with a certain car where money is no object and just go for anything no matter what and they do exist.

Ask up front cost of diagnosis and cost of repair. Explain what it does not what you think it is too. Let them find it with description of what is wrong. I already said I thought engine more than clutch or drivetrain as a wild guess and no car in front of me so discount that. Intermittent stuff will magically quit doing it when witnessed, a well known fact that annoys everyone.

Come back and let us know what was found or how it worked out for you. Good luck,

Tom

Re: 95 Tercel studdering in 2nd & 3rd Sign In

I ended up walking in to a local mechanic shop. I told them what was happening, and he said it sounded like it needed a tune-up, and would need some new spark plugs and a fuel filter ect. He quoted me 300 dollars minimum.

I drove down to Lordco in the off chance that he was right in his guess. Picked up 4 spark plugs and a fuel filter for under 50$.

Got home, installed the new filter with no fix. The next day i pulled out the spark plugs and they were the most corroded little guys i've ever seen. Did a little more research and it seems my piston rings are old and oil gets up past and burns making the plugs get like that every 2 years or so.

As far as money into the car goes, a fix on the engine is not a priority, but to keep adding oil and spark plugs until it does finally quit on me works for now.

Oh, it Runs great now!

Thank you very much for your help!

If that is the case it shouldn't be coming as any surprise. That engine must have been consuming oil for a good period preceding this.

Glad it's fixed for now. Sure seems like a tired engine so just plan on plugs often. If all looked about the same coming out and an oil burner it's probably just wear in general,
