96 Chevy Cavalier overheating

96 Chevy Cavalier overheating Sign In

1996 Chevy Cavalier, 2.2 140000 miles

Replaced leaking water pump and thermostat, no more leaks but is overheating now.

Attempted to purge air from system and found that with car running no coolant was flowing through the upper hose.

It feels like no flow upper hose is scorching hot and the hose on the thermostat side, other side of radiator, is cool.

Oil looks clean. I tried to pour coolant into upper hose and saw that it flowed through to the other side. closed off that side and filled all the way up. Still overheating.

Opened both bleeder valves to release air, still overheating.

Not sure what to do next.

The thermostat could be not opening. Are you sure you put it in facing the right drection?

Yes I tried to flip it around and it doesn't fit that way.

Yopu may have to use a vacuum fill to get all the air out. that's what we do. If you still get no circulation, you may have a plugged up radiator.

Vacuum on the bleeder valves?

I did put coolant through one radiator hose and watched it come out of the other end.

That won't do anything for getting air pockets out.

The vacuum fill attaches to the filler cap. It pulls the whole system into a vacuum and draws the coolant in from a container.

Fans operating ?

An old trick used in the field- use an asprin to hold T'stst open this will greatly aid refilling with coolant.

Well, I'm as old as dirt and I never heard that one before, sounds like a good idea though.

The radiator wasn't restricted when it came in. Somewhere from putting a new water pump in and dumping the coolant from the system it is overheating now. It was working fine when it came in. The fans are working as well.

Though i am thinking now about just filling the system without the thermostat in, then putting the thermostat in once it's full. The design is odd with the water pump on one side of the thermostat and the reservoir on the other. It's like the water pump can't pump backwards, if that makes sense.

Going to try to fill it without thermostat in the morning when I get back in there.

If you didn't know this when you fill the coolant systems on those the bleeder should be open. Fill up the system until you get a stream of coolant coming out of the bleeder. Then close it. Don't open them with the engine running or it will suck air into the system. Squeezing on the hoses while it is running while your waiting for the T stat to open will help migrate the air to the surge tank. Once the T stat opens shut the engine off and let it sit. Then add more coolant to the surge tank again.

Make sure the surge tank cap is good. It is usually a good idea to replace them when you work on the coolant system.

TY discretesignals, filled like you said with bleeders open, squeezing coolant hose as I filled until it came out. Drove it around, no more overheating. opened reservoir and filled some more with valves open again to top off. Drove some more and no more overheating
