96 Explorer start problem	Sign In

Help, all of a sudden, my 96 Explorer XLT (98k on it) has trouble turning over. I crank the ignition and that's all it does, cranks, 5-8 seconds, not touching gas pedal for fear of flooding it. I do it a couple times wait a minute and crank it again, maybe 2nd time it catches. When it starts, it runs horibbly (chuggin), after about a minute, a little better, after a couple minutes, boom, it runs like a top. I go to the store or anywhere, come back out it starts right up, fine. If I go somewhere for a couple hours, then I'll have problems again. After searching the internet, I haven't really gotten a clear picture of what is wrong. I am not a gearhead ( I say that with respect) but my bro-in-law is (kind of, we just replaced my brakes, awesome). So I just want to get an idea before I bug him again or I have to go to a pro. I figured this would be the place for an answer. Thanks for any help.

Try putting the key to just run position and listen for the buzz of the fuel pump. It should just buzz a few seconds and stop. If car starts right up or better there is a fuel pressure problem, injector leakdown, check valve, fuel filter, the pump itself and perhaps a few other things but start there,

The gas pedal doesn't really give it more gas by itself with fuel injection. You could pump it or hold it in a different spot and it would just confuse it. Try anyway and note the results,
