I recently came across a 97 Escort 4cyl, AT, 4 door, A/C, 120K miles body and interior both in good shape, good tires.... BUT #4 exhaust valve broke and basically trashed the piston, I'm not sure I would trust the head. The head is off the engine and the #4 piston has been removed.

I told the guy I thought the safe bet would be to put a boneyard motor in. He has since come up with another car.

I thought about making him an offer. Did alittle checking and it looks like I could pickup a lower mile motor for around $500.

Dont know much about the newer Escorts.
What would a fair as is price be for this car? (want to treat the guy fair)
Is it reasonable to sink alittle money in this one or pass on it?

Hang in there -- eyes are going! A good used engine would be the way I would go with this. When a valve and piston crunch something bad happened and there can be lots more.

Make sure a replacement engine has a good or better NEW timing belt and you'll be set for a while, T

Opinion: A good used engine will beat out rebuilts. Good salvage yards can be real clever at knowing what is good or not

Thanks Tom

After looking at the head and piston for #4 I REALLY didnt want to try to salvage that motor.

I know the junkyard will only give him $50-$75 for the car. Thought I would offer him $200-$300 for it. Is that fair or am I being cheap?

To junk a car you won't get much. Your offer seems more than fair for the known problems it has. I've spent a lifetime in FREE cars that did cost me bucks to fix up.

Off Topic: My daily driver -- 89 Town Car just hit 210,000 miles and runs like new but body going, T and Kitty!

Sounds like a good ol Lincoln !!

My daily runner is a 91 Mazda 626 with 195,000+. Recently took a trip with alot of 4 lane and toll road, lotsa miles at 75-85mph and got 31.9mpg Smile

My best was a 79 Capri 5.0L I bought used. Drove it 136,000 myself in 11yr,sold it with 214,000 on it and got $100 more than I gave for it.

Thanks Again Tom
