'98 GMC Sierra Fuel Pump Replaced, But...

Just over the weekend, my husband and I were forced to get the fuel pump replaced on our '98 GMC Sierra (2WD, 6 cylinder) for the low, low price of $730, after tow/tax. (It's probably not a bad cost, but it was a LOT of money for us and money we didn't have. Had to beg for help from his grandmother. Anyway, ever since we got it back, it will only start up if he pumps hard on the gas. I called the mechanics, this morning, to see if that was normal. Of course, he said it wasn't and my husband just took our truck in to get it looked at -- for free, thankfully. My questions are these: what do you guys -think- the problem could be? How much should it cost us to get it repaired? Should we have to pay for it, if it's related to the fuel pump? ...And, I can't think of anything else to ask. I wish to God I knew more about cars. Thanks so much for any and all replies. ~Wyn P.S. JD Byrider is the devil.
